Capercaillie

Waiting For The Wheel To Turn

by Capercaillie
Capercaillie

Biography:

Capercaillie is a folk band founded in Oban, Scotland in the 1980s by Donald Shaw and fronted by Karen Matheson. They recorded their first album, Cascade, in 1984. Their 1992 EP Coisich, a Rùin was the first ever Scottish Gaelic language record to reach the UK Top 40 singles chart. They have also pioneered the integration of divergent styles, including some electronics and African rhythms, into their music, though it is still primarily Scottish folk music.

CAPO: 3rd Fret

[Intro]
Am D (4x}

[Verse 1]
Am D
Living in a place with time
Am D G
Living in a place where reality is
Am D
Standing on a big broad line
Am D G
Watching it all go by, ah
F G C
But you're taking it all away
F G Dm7
The music, the tongue and the old refrains
F G C
You're coming here to play
F G Am Em
But you're pulling the roots from a dying age

[Interlude]
Am D (4x}

[Verse 2]
Am D
Remember the Buachaille Mor
Am D G
Reaching for the skies from the barren shores
Am D
Watching over villages burned
Am D G
And counting the days since the gael kept home
F G C
Well, the stranger claims it now
F G Dm7
Sitting like a king, with his gold from the south
F G C
Don't you see the waves of wealth
F G Am Em Am
Washing away the soul from the land?

[Chorus]
F Am
Here come the Clearances, my friend
Dm G Am
Silently our history is coming to life again
F G F
We feel the breeze from the storm to come
G F
And up and down this coast
Dm7 Em F
We're waiting for the wheel to turn

[Instrumental]
Am D (4x}
F C Dm7 C

[Verse 3]
Am D
Free were the fields of fern
Am D G
Free was the fishing in the coves of care
Am D
Empty are the homes of old
Am D G
Empty for the sake of summer's cause
F G C
Yes, you're taking it all away
F G Dm7
The music and the tongue and the old refrains
F G C
You're coming here to play
F G Am Em Am
But you're pulling the roots from a dying age

[Chorus]
F Am
Here come the Clearances, my friend
Dm G Am
Silently our history is coming to life again
F G F G F
We feel the breeze from the storm to come
G F
And up and down this coast
Dm7 Em F Am
We're waiting for the wheel to turn

[Chorus]
F Am
Here come the Clearances, my friend
Dm G Am
Silently our history is coming to life again

We're waiting for the wheel to turn
