[Verse 1]
G G/F# Em
Couldn't wait around just to share a smoke.
G G/F# Em
Burned it down to the filter till it burned my throat.
G G/F# Em
Made me start to think of what I ought to know,
F C F
So I put out the fire and I wrote you a note,

[Chorus]
G F C G
Said I just smoked the last, from that old pack of Shanghai cigarettes
G G/F# Em
Left it all in the past and there's nothing left.
G F Em
Go on and say hello, but I hope you know:
F C F G
This'll never be right, and I will never let go.

[Verse 2]
G G/F# Em
Remember the day that the whole thing started?
G G/F# Em
And the little gold box in the glove com - partment.
G F Em
I think I told you so, it was always waiting
F C F
To be opened at the first sign of breaking

[Chorus]
G F C G
And I just smoked the last, from that old pack of Shanghai cigarettes.
G G/F# Em
Left it all in the past and there's nothing left.
G F Em
Go on and say hello, but I hope you know
F C F (G)
This'll never be right, and I will never let go.

Trying to quit, will make you wish you didn't start

When the box is as empty as the hole in your heart,

[Chorus]
G
Cause you just smoked the last
F C G
From that old pack of Shanghai cigarettes
G G/F# Em
Left it all in the past and there's nothing left.
G F Em
Go on and say hello, but I hope you know
F C F C
This'll never be right, and I will never let go.
F C F C
This'll never be right, and I will never let go.
