Bruce Hornsby

Line In The Dust

by Bruce Hornsby
Bruce Hornsby

Biography:

Bruce Randall Hornsby (born November 23, 1954 in Williamsburg, Virginia) is an American singer, virtuoso pianist, accordion player, and songwriter. He is probably best known for his 1980s signature song "The Way It Is" and the top five hits "Mandolin Rain," and "The Valley Road", all recorded as Bruce Hornsby & The Range, and for his long association with the Grateful Dead. In some of his solo albums (from 1993) he moved in a less commercial, more musically-challenging direction.

Intro:
| A C Em A | 2x

Verse:
A
I'm walking outside
C
And I see you arrive
Em
I say let's go for a ride
G
And have a good old time, whoa
A
I'm saving up lies
C
Or just stay quiet every time
Em
While you talkin' your line
G
Keep everything fine, whoa, fine

Pre Chorus:
A
Between us, I can see
C
Things are not what they used to be
Em
My old friend changed
G
Or maybe it was me
A
Things get so complicated
C
Jokes made, friendships dissipated
Em
Long silence but I speak
G
Now so belated

Chorus:
A
I say, hey, wait a minute
C
What's that you said?
Em A
I'm Not so sure that I heard you right
A
Whoa, oh, hey, wait a minute
C
Oh, say that again
Em
You're in the dust
A
Drawing a long straight line

Interlude:
A C Em A

Verse:
A
We'd be playing outside
C
We'd swing on the swings
Em
Shared most everything
G
Sit there and even sing
A
Now I sit and wonder
C
Why it's a friendship charade
Em
Looking for fights all day
G
I don't want to play, whoa

Pre Chorus:
A
But I do, here we go
C
I fire off another lame remark
You're in the dark
Em
No bite, just your bark
G
But it leaves a painful mark
A
Oh, painful mark on your soul
C
Takes its toll
Em
I might as well fold
I've got my courage up
G
Gonna roll low

Chorus:
A
I say, hey, wait a minute
C
What's that you said?
Em A
I'm Not so sure that I heard you right
A
Whoa, oh, hey, wait a minute
C
Oh, say that again
Em
You're in the dust
A
Drawing a long straight line

Interlude:
| A C Em A | 2x

Verse:
A
We talk and talk
C
But you never see
Em
Unreconstructed defiantly
My old friend changed
G
Or maybe it was me
A
Things get so complicated
C
Jokes made, friendships dissipated
Em
I've stayed quiet
G
So we don't get alienated

Chorus:
A
I say, hey, wait a minute
C
What's that you said?
Em A
I'm Not so sure that I heard you right
A
Whoa, oh, hey, wait a minute
C
Oh, say that again
Em
You're in the dust
A
Drawing a long straight line
