Bill Fay

There Is A Valley

by Bill Fay
Bill Fay

Biography:

Bill Fay is a singer-songwriter and pianist from London.

Fay began writing songs in the early 1960s while attending university and in 1966 cut a demo using a mobile studio belonging to a man named John Boden. Impressed by the demo, ex-Them drummer Terry Noon helped Bill to sign a recording contract with Decca. In 1967 the label released the single "Some Good Advice"/"Screams in the Ears", produced by early Donovan co-manager Peter Eden. The single "introduced [Fay's] characteristic downbeat melodies and scrambled impressionistic lyrics"

A D
There is a valley where the trees stand tall
A D
And an icy wind blows
A D
Trees don't speak, but they speak to each other
A D
Of a people long ago

A D
When the soldiers came and took away
A D
Their villages one by one
A D
And the fury of that moment they felt
A D
But could only silently look upon

A D A D

Sheep don't speak, but they speak to each other
A D
Of a killing long ago

When the people came and sacrificed
A D
Their children to the sun
D E
And the fury of the moment they felt
A D
But could only silently look upon

A D
There is a hill near Jerusalem
A D
That wild flowers grow upon

Flowers don't speak, but they speak to each other
A D
Of a crucifixion

Guess because he said he was
A D
The son of God
D E
And the fury of that moment they felt
A D
They could only silently look upon

Every city bar brawl, every fist fight
A D
Every bullet from a gun
D E
It's written in the palms, the palms of

The Holy One
