Story Of A Heart

by Benny Andersson Band
Benny Andersson Band

Biography:

Whilst he hid it fairly well beneath layers of multitrack production and the shimmering harmonies of Agnetha and Frida, Benny Andersson's music has always been influenced by the melodies and structures of Swedish, and northern European folk, polka, and Schlager (popular music-hall tunes setting those central European dance floors alight in the baby boomer years). Listen carefully, though, and ABBA's finest moments owe more to traditional forms of folk and fireside singalongs

N.B. This is how to play it in C. To match the original, you'll have to transpose it to F#.

[Verse 1]

C
It must have been him

Em
Just a glimpse of a face in the crowd

F
That's all it takes

Dm
My heart is racing

C
I stand in a trance

Em
As I stare at the back of a bus

F Dm
Knowing there's no use denying

F G
I can't stop thinking 'bout us

[Chorus]

C
The story of a heart. A story, all of it mine

G
Then you took it from me, every glorious line

Am
I was safe and warm and now I'm out in the cold

G F C G
And I know I shouldn't have told my story

C
Story of a heart, I laid myself open wide

G
Let you read the pages where the ink hadn't dried

G F C G
All emotion pent up inside, my story

[Verse 2]

I try to resist
But the images keep coming through
So many years
Still I'm defenceless
The house by the lake
His hands resting awhile on the oars
Speaking with quiet conviction
Carefully unlocking doors

[Repeat chorus]

[Bridge]

Em
Did he see me

F
Or did I just imagine it all

Dm
Putting a face on a stranger

F Am C G
A face I find more and more hard to recall

[Verse 3 but same chords as chorus]

Never given up, I look for you everywhere
Time went by and sadness took the place of despair
In a way you'll stay with me 'til death do us part
Like a shadow deep in my heart forever

[Repeat chorus]

Story of a heart, I laid myself open wide
Let you read the pages where the ink hadn't dried
Swept away and lost in love what was I to do
I just had to give it to you, my story

[Chorus continues]
