[Verses]

C G Fmaj7
See her by the garden holding a bull snake
C G Fmaj7
Through the rocks and trees the river ran, till it found the lake
C G Fmaj7
He looked like Elvis - that's what all his friends said
Am G Fmaj7
She had a tattoo of a squid just below the back of her neck

C G Fmaj7
And their legs were twisted up in each other
C G Fmaj7
While the rain came down like watermelon seeds
C G Fmaj7
And the tall grass bent over
Fmaj7 Am Em F G
And you couldn't see across the la------ke
Am Em F
Across the la--------ke

C G Fmaj7
He watched the ocean from the balcony
C G Fmaj7
Out past the break the clouds were twisting like a million wet black snakes
C G Fmaj7
Piles of driftwood and seaweed scattered up and down the beach
Am G Fmaj7
And when he went back inside, she was already asleep

C G Fmaj7
And their lives were twisted up in each other
C G Fmaj7
While the waves came in one after the other
C G Fmaj7
The curtains blew back and forth through the window
Fmaj7 Am Em F G
He lay awake till the rain came down
Am Em F
Till the rain came down

C G Am G
And whatever an old nail will hold
Am G F G
And whenever you let go
C G Am G
And whatever an old nail will hold

Fmaj7 G

C G Fmaj7
Her clothes were scattered on the bed and on the floor
C G Fmaj7
It was dark in the room save for a little light under the door
C G Fmaj7
When he moved out they tried to stay friends
Am G Fmaj7
And planned to harvest the garden they had planted in the spring

C G Fmaj7
Like flowers twisted up in each other
C G Fmaj7
Trying to live in a jar full of sunlight and water
C G Fmaj7
There is never gonna be a better answer
Fmaj7 Am Em F G
Never gonna be another one li---ke her
Am Em F
Another one like her

C G Fmaj7
And now you see it everywhere you go
C G Fmaj7
Like a tag under the overpass or birds rising from the corn
C G Fmaj7
Each piece of the puzzle leaves an outline of the next
Am G Fmaj7
Like a skinned knee hidden under her only dress

C G Fmaj7
There's a swarm of bees in the clover
C G Fmaj7
A string of barbed wire that the tree grew over
C G Fmaj7
An ant crawls from a crack in the counter
Fmaj7 Am Em F G
And now there's ice across the la----ke
Am Em F
Across the la--------ke

C G Am G
And whatever an old nail will hold
Am G F G
And whenever you let go
C G Am G
And whatever an old nail will hold

Fmaj7 G
