Belle And Sebastian

Play For Today

by Belle And Sebastian
Belle And Sebastian

Biography:

Belle and Sebastian is a band from Glasgow. Led by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Murdoch, the seven-piece band has an intimate, majestic sound that is equal parts folk-rock and '60s pop. Murdoch has a gift not only for whimsy and surrealism, but also for odd, unsettling lyrical detail which keeps the songs grounded in a tangible reality.

Based in Glasgow, Scotland, Belle and Sebastian released their first two albums in 1996: Tigermilk, recorded over three days

Play for Today by Belle & Sebastian

Intro: C - Am - F - C (x2)

Verse:
C Am
I'm in a play written today about a boy
F
Who hides in attics when the sun is up
C
Everyone is at work
C
What will I do? Where will I go?
Am
Show me the way
F
The truth, the anger, show me rules of thumb
C
Show the way to grow old

G
Love is a guide
Am
The endless river of the soul
F
But we are mean
C
The dried up riverbeds of rock and stone
G
Lust is my friend
Am
She comes to me when I am tired

Chorus:
C Caug
Life is a road, death is a myth
C6 C7
Love is a fraud, it's misunderstood
F C
Work is a sentence, family's a drag
G
This house is a trap

C - Am - F - C

Verse:
C Am
I'm in a play written today about a girl
F
She gets on perfectly with young and old
C
Everybody loves her
C
What would she wear? The cut of her hair?
Am
The way that she slides
F
Gracefully into the working week
C
She hides her baggage inside

G
She's got a friend
Am
An ugly monster that will eat your face
F
She has to cry
C
A hefty catalogue of wasted time
G
She's got a friend
Am
A lonely monster that will prey on you

Chorus:
C Caug
Life is a secret, death is a myth
C6 C7
Love is a fraud, it's misunderstood
F C
Work is a sentence, family's a drag
G
This house is a trap

Chorus:
C Caug
Life is a secret, death is a myth
C6 C7
Love is a fraud, it's misunderstood
F C
Work is a sentence, family's a drag
G
This house is a trap

C - Am - F - C (x2)

Verse:
C Am
I'm a play written today about a boy
F
Tired and melancholy, takes the weight
C
Takes the weight of the world
C
I walked alone, loving the sun
Am
Walking the earth
F
A worn-out sister who is twenty three
C
Dried and wrinkled, alone

G
I'll give you a month
Am
To see past shadows in your sacred night
F
Give you a week
C
To look Medusa in the eye
G
I'll give you a month
Am
To notice heaven at the side of stage

F - C - F - C

F/C C
You're king inside your head
F/C C
You're sitting on a throne of sand
F/C C
You're pushing back the tide
F/C C
So lift the mountain up
F/C C
So tie the writers' ribbons down
F/C C
Assemble all your troops
F/C C
We go to war with metaphors
F/C C F/C
You suddenly see sense, (I suddenly see sense)
C
And when you do, I'll have the higher ground
F/C C
You're not the king of me
F/C C
I'll take my chance and play for tyranny
F/C C
I build the sets, I light the scene
F/C C
We're prettier when we are on the screen
F/C C
I build the sets, I light the scene
F/C C
We're braver when we're on the sacred screen
F/C C
The backstage of your life
F/C C
It's filled with dust and lines you should have sung
F/C C
The backstage of your life
F/C C
It's filled with echoes of the ones you loved
