Battlefield Band

The Arran Convict

by Battlefield Band
Battlefield Band

Biography:

The Battlefield Band is a Scottish band playing traditional music and their own compositions, with occasional forays into other traditions as well as covers of contemporay popular songs.

The band's current brand of music was developed when Brian McNeill and Alan Reid were joined by Jenny Clark (vocals, guitar, cittern, dulcimer) and Duncan MacGillivray (pipes and whistle). Stand Easy, the album they recorded in 1979, still stands up as one of the band's finest.

The Arran Convict

[Chorus]
G C G
I wish I was back on the long lands of Ferry
D Em
With long legged Marry, breathin’ the spray
A G D
And the sweet island air of the morning
G C G
But I’m wastin’ away in this sweltering prison,
D C
The mercury’s rising and freedoms a dream,
G D G
That arrives and escapes with the dawning

D G D
It seems just like yesterday, sailing from Bradon
G Em D
Across the Atlantic in search of a wife and some land
A G D
But the New Brunswick winters are lonely and hard
G Em D
So I followed the wagons out West with no money or plan

[Chorus]
G C G
I wish I was back on the long lands of Ferry
D Em
With long legged Marry, breathin’ the spray
A G D
And the sweet island air of the morning
G C G
But I’m wastin’ away in this sweltering prison,
D C
The mercury’s rising and freedoms a dream,
G D G
That arrives and escapes with the dawning

D G D
I worked on the railroad with Chinese and Irish
G Em D
I slept in the pine-woods and heard the wolf creep to the door
A G D
But a Scotsman in Portland took all of my money
G Em D
He sold me a cartload of candles he robbed from the storeD G D
I fell in with gangsters and dealers and moonshine
G Em D
And soon they involved me with drivin’ their wagons of booze
D A D
One night we were ambushed and I killed a black man
G Em D
Now I’m in the jailhouse and one of the hard labor crew

[Chorus]
G C G
I wish I was back on the long lands of Ferry
D Em
With long legged Marry, breathin’ the spray
A G D
And the sweet island air of the morning
G C G
But I’m wastin’ away in this sweltering prison,
D C
The mercury’s rising and freedoms a dream,
G D G
That arrives and escapes with the dawning

D A D
Sometimes when it’s dark I remember Lav Ransa?
G Em A
And days when the rains from Kentire was a sheet without end
D G D
And long legged Mary who’d smile at me slyly
G Em D
When they release me I think I’ll go back there again

[Chorus]
repeat twice

G C G
I wish I was back on the long lands of Ferry
D Em
With long legged Marry, breathin’ the spray
A G D
And the sweet island air of the morning
G C G
But I’m wastin’ away in this sweltering prison,
D C
The mercury’s rising and freedoms a dream,
G D G
That arrives and escapes with the dawning
