Balto

The Railyard

by Balto
Balto

Biography:

Balto is an American band.

Following an ill-fated six-month stint as a copy editor and telemarketer in Moscow, Russia, guitarist and songwriter Dan Sheron lost his marbles and went to Siberia, where he wrote a cycle of songs describing the life he’d decided to leave behind. That winter (2010), Balto laid those songs on its first record, October’s Road, in a single blustery day in a Brooklyn basement and went on to tour the United States & Canada for the first time.

[N.C.] Oh my sweet little darling dear
When these words reach your ears I’ll be long gone from here
All alone in a railyard, the shrill whistle blows
Oh where I’m a-going really god only knows

[INTRO]
Dm F C Gm Dm F C Gm

[VERSE]
Dm F
I’ll call her Eliza, the girl with no name
C Gm
All wrapped up in silence, in secrets, in pain
Dm F
In north country winter, both tied to the road
C Gm
She Smiled and said nothing, I bared her my soul.
Dm F
And I knew that I loved her, but I couldn’t say why
C Gm
And all of that silence might well have been lies
Dm F
She cried out “I love you, but I’ll never be free.
C Gm
There ‘aint no use guessing, just forget about me.”

Dm C Gm Dm C Gm

[CHORUS]
F C Gm Bb
Oooh, Oooh, It’s lonesome out here on the road
F C
Where the last points of fire that light the night sky
Dm Bb
Burn down to their embers and flicker and die
F C Gm Bb
And Oooh Oooh, My fingers go numb in the cold
F C
Where the last little spark that’s disrupting the dark
Dm Bb
Is that last bit of feeling that’s left in my heart

Dm F C Gm Dm F C Gm

[VERSE]
Dm F
My footsteps were haunted for many long weeks
C Gm
I couldn’t find shelter in those dull dusty streets
Dm F
So I found me a railcar with no windows, no doors
C Gm
Poured out all my love on the cold rusty floor

[VERSE]
Dm F
And in the gray morning I was long gone, away
C Gm
In a far eastern country where the language is strange
Dm F
Where the seabirds they circle no ocean nearby
C Gm
Like lost souls they’re crying, lamenting their plight

Dm C Gm

[VERSE]
Dm F
The sun rises and sets in the same goddamn place
C Gm
Shadows circle my body and laugh in my face
Dm F
Though I set out to find me a whole brand new life
C Gm
I don’t want to forget her, I don’t want to die

Dm C Gm Dm C Gm

[CHORUS]
F C Gm Bb
Oooh Oooh, It’s lonesome out here on the road
