Austin Lounge Lizards

Last Words

by Austin Lounge Lizards
Austin Lounge Lizards

Biography:

They look like a bluegrass string quintet wearing hawaiian shirts. Indeed, it's a fitting look. The music is difficult to describe with elements of folk rock, country, and bluegrass blended with just about enything.

The music is marked by multi-part vocal harmonies and intricate picking lines, but they are most well known for their satirical lyrics and will lampoon anyone or anything. Subjects range from the big political targets like Gingrich

INTRO: (G-A-B) C C G C G C G C G

The curtain of darkness is fallin’
G
And my friends are all here at my side.
C G
Are those the sweet voices of angels
G
As I rise on that heavenly tide?
A D7

All hearts overflowin’ with sadness
G
And those words left so often unsaid
C G
Then I could hear a voice whispering softly,
C G C
“Could I have all your stuff when your dead?”
G D G C G

“Could I have your TV and your pickup?
C
And I’ve always admired your shoes.
G
Could I have that old dining room table?
C
And there’s a couple of chairs I could use.”
G D7

“Well, you know that you’re headed to glory,
G
And like a star, up to heaven you’ll shoot
C G
When they write the last page of your story,
C G C
Could I try on that seersucker suit?”
G D G C G

SOLO/INSTRUMENTAL: (G-A-B) C C G C G C G C G

It was the voice of my dear brother Thomas.
G
He was kneelin’ down close by my side.
C G
His breath had just come from a funeral
G
For a mouth full of teeth that had died.
A D7

Well, I prayed my last prayer for salvation.
G
I was feelin’ the touch of God’s hand.
C G
But I could still hear the voice of my brother
C G C
As they struck up that old angel band.
G D G C G

“Could I have your old ski boots and surf board?
C
And maybe that four-poster bed?
G
Would you mind if I took a few records?
C
Just Nirvana, The Stones, and the Dead.”
G D7

Well, you know that you can’t take it with you
G
To your heavenly home up on high.
C G
When you pass through those gates, and they hand you your wings,
C G C
Could I have all your stuff when you die?
G D G C G

But the angels consulted St. Peter
C
And flew me back to my hospital bed.
G D
My life was a new day a-dawning,
G C
And the angels took Tommy instead.
G C G C G
