Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah

For Eddy

by Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah
Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah

Biography:

Aliotta-Haynes-Jeremiah was an American rock group from the early 1970s.

This trio was originally composed of bassist Mitch Aliotta, drummer Ted Aliotta, and guitarist Skip Haynes. Ted left after their debut album to be replaced by pianist John Jeremiah. They scored a popular regional hit in the Chicago, Illinois area in 1971 with the single and album "Lake Shore Drive," an homage to the famed lakefront highway in Chicago and (some believe) also to LSD, a hallucinogen.

[Intro]

[Verse 1]
B C#m D#m
He'd been dealt a bad hand nearly fifty years old
E
Cleanin' glasses, at night in a bar
D#m
Only one good hand for to play him his tunes
C#m F#
On a piano all tired out and marred

[Chorus]
E B
And the stone angel hung on the wall up above
C#m E F#
Looked out blind, all the nights long.
B C#m D#m C#m
But when the one-armed man played to an empty saloon,
B A B
She looked down and smiled as he played her his songs.

[Instrumental]

[Verse 2]
B C#m D#m
Duke, the white Shepherd who guarded the room
E
Never leavin' the back of the bar
D#m
Would climb up on the stage and curl up around his feet
C#m F#
As to guard him and his music from harm.

[Chorus]
E B
And the stone angel hung on the wall up above
C#m E F#
Looked out blind, all the nights long.
B C#m D#m C#m
But when the one-armed man played to an empty saloon,
B A B
She looked down and smiled as he played her his songs.

[Instrumental]

[Verse 3]
B C#m D#
I heard him one night, when he thought to be alone.
E
And I lied and I did him a wrong.
D#m
I can't give back the pleasure his music gave to me,
C#m F#
I can only give him this song.

[Verse 4]
B C#m D#m
He played better with one hand than most men with two.
E
Yet made posters for all of the stars.
D#m
And I wish to my heart he could play for you,
C#m F#
So you'd know just how happy you are.

[Final Chorus]
E B
And the stone angel hung on the wall up above
C#m E F#
And me and the big white dog.
B C#m D# C#
All stopped once to listen,to the one-armed man play
B A E
To their smiles in an empty saloon.

[Outro]
E D#m6 C#m7 B
