[Verse 1]
C G ~ Em
Where I was born was called the bad side of the town

But the people knew the difference between a smile and a frown

And it didn't cost a penny to shake a hand or two
Em D
And if you help to make it through the dark
C ~ ~ G F#dim7 Em
I'd do the same thing to you

[Verse 2]
C G ~
Bad side of town, old soldiers never back down
Em D F#dim7 Em
Got a penny in the pocket for a bottle of Brown
C G ~
And the women fall to giggling, mothers everyone
Em D
And the children play with the children
C ~ ~ G G7
And the children always had fun

Em C G ~
And the bad side of town was named by nameless men
Em D F#dim7
Who knew themselves as faces, never as friends
Em C G ~
And the bad side of town, for sure it got pulled down
Em D
And the people who live still people it
C ~ ~ G G7
Never put their faces down

C ~ Am G6 E Am
And I can hear the river flowing, inside of everyone
D Bm B7 Em
In spite of everyone, the tide is on the turn____
