E
Did I mention he was dreaming
Ab7
When the devil came to town
Dbm
I was awoken by the screaming
B
But nobody heard a sound
A
And the lies we tell at breakfast
Dbm
Won't match the lies we share for lunch
Ab
And the lies we serve for dinner
A B
They’re the tallest of the bunch, yeah
E
Did I mention he was cold
Ab7
When he finally lost control of the ghost
Dbm
And the epilogue I dreaded
B
Now seemed likely to console
A
And I'm still not understanding
Dbm
The things he did before he left
Ab
And the one thing that will haunt me
A B
Is right before his final breath, when he said

E B
"Oh they broke me down, yeah they broke me down
Gbm Dbm B
So I can't be your saint you see, cause I won't be hanging around
E B
And they broke him down, yeah they broke him down
Gbm Dbm B
So I stood there and I held my breath cause I knew that it wouldn't be long
E
Till they broke me down

Interlude -x4-: E B A

Dbm B
And no one holds a grudge dear
A E B Dbm
Like I do, I see it through
B
And you may not remember
A
It was nothing much at the time
E B
But I kept it bottled inside

Ab A
Oh and we all know how that goes
Ab A
I'd given up on letting go
E Dbm Ab
So here we are, with nothing left, dear
A
And now you've left here
B
And I was last to know

E
Holy smokes
Ab7
Some say he'd given up the ghost, but he wouldn't do that
Dbm
I think he's hiding in the background
B
Of his favorite photographs
A
And he's living as a beggar
Dbm
Or maybe a millionaire
Ab
But the one thing that I'm sure of
A B
Is he found some comfort there, that's fair

E B
Because they broke him down, oh they broke him down
Gbm Dbm B
So he can't be my saint no more, he won't be hangin around

Oh no

Interlude -x4-: E B A

E B
And they broke him down, yeah they broke him down
Gbm Dbm B
He said "I can't be your saint no more because I won't be hangin around"
E B
And they broke him down, yeah they broke him down
Gbm B
So I stood there and I held my breath because I knew that it wouldn't be long
E
Before they broke me down
