Let me tell you a
C
story about a woman and a
F
man maybe you will find
D
familiar maybe you won't
G
understand

The man's name I don't
C
remember he was always Joe to
F
me but I can't forget the
G
woman she was always
C
Christie Lee

He was working in a
C
night club that's where he played the
F
saxophone he used to fake the stock
D
arrangements he left the customers
G
alone

But one night before the last
C
song about a quarter after
F
three he saw her standing at the
G
coat check and made his move on

She was a nice piece of
C
music she had a rhythm all her
F
own he blew a solo like a
D
blind man she really dug his
G
saxophone

She wanted more than just an
C
encore and he could play in every
F
key he left the stage and packed his
G
alto and took it home with
C
Christie Lee

Oh I heard the
F
man knew 'the bird' like the bible you know the
G C
man could blow an educated axe he couldn't
F
see that Christie Lee was a woman who didn't
G
need another lover all she wanted was the sax

It took a while for him to
C
notice it took a while for him to
F
see he was never in
G
control here it was always
C
Christie Lee

Oh the
F
man took a calculated gamble yes the
G C
man had the power to perform but Christie
F
Lee was more than he knew how to handle she didn't
G
need him as a man all she wanted was the horn

They say that Joe became a
C
wino they say he always drinks
F
alone they say he stumbles like a
D
blind man they say he sold his
G
saxophone

Even the band must face the
C
music that's what the moral is to
F
me the only time you hit the
G
high notes is when you play for
C
