The Microphones

The Moon

by The Microphones
The Microphones

Biography:

The Microphones is the name of a project that Anacortes, WA's Phil Elverum has headed since the late 90s. Its sound is best described as lo-fi "fuzz folk," ranging from drum-crashing, bass-thrashing sonic freakouts, strummy classical guitar love songs, angelic vocal choirs, and almost-whispered vocals over harmoniums and bell kits. In 2004, Elverum abandoned the "Microphones" name to begin recording as Mount Eerie. But in December 2007, he began

Music and Lyrics by Phil Elverum. Tab by Cameron Kisiel.

[Verse 1]
Bm
I drove up to the city at night
G
And found the place where you grew up
Bm
And then where you stayed
G
And then we walked around and stayed up late
Bm
Under city lights; and I spent the night
G
Next to you in the house where you grew up
Bm
Next to you I miraculously woke up
G
In your parents' house I lied in bed with you

[Chorus]
Bm G
I went back to feel alone there
Bm G
I went back to wipe it clean
Bm G
I took the lights and radio towers out of my dreams

[Verse 2]
Bm
And we went all the way up to the small town
G Bm
Where I'm from; with foggy air and the wind and the mountain tops
G
And we clung to rocks and we looked off
Bm
You held my hand, you almost got to start feeling me
G
I finally felt like I was breathing free
Bm G
And under swaying trees we fell asleep and had the same dream
Bm
The stars were bright, we dream the same every night
G
On my island home I spent some time with you

[Chorus]
Bm G
I went back to feel alone there
Bm G
I went back there by myself
Bm G
And gave up on everything that we'd felt

[Verse 3]
D
We found a precious place in the sand
G
Right out in the wind, and we lied under a blanket
D
And heard the furious sound

The roar of waves, the pounding surf
G
Two bodies on the earth
D G
It was intense just getting to be there next to you
D
And you were trying to get me then
G
And I was happy to let you in

[Chorus]
Bm G
I went back and wished I hadn't
Bm G
I went back and felt regret
Bm G
I went to the beach and I stared west

[Verse 4]
Bm
Every night when the sun went down
G
In the town where we live, the empty streets were lit up
Bm
By reflective light from a distant sun
G
Bouncing off a glowing ball of rock
Bm
We just lied on the roof and watched
G
The moon, the moon, the blue light of the moon
Bm G
We didn't talk and silently we both felt powerful
Bm G
Like the moon my chest was full
Bm
Because we both knew we're just floating in the same space
G Bm
Over molten rock, and we felt safe and discovered that our skin is soft
G
There's nothing left except certain death
Bm G
And that was comforting at night out under the moon

[Chorus]
Bm G
I went out last night to forget that
Bm G
I went out and stared it down
Bm G
But the moon just stared back at me
Bm G
And in its light I saw my two feet on the ground
