Wye Oak

If Children Were Wishes

by Wye Oak
Wye Oak

Biography:

Wye Oak (née Monarch) is a duo of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack, formed in mid-2006.

Wasner and Stack have been playing music together and apart in Baltimore, MD, and chose their name from the honorary state tree of Maryland. If Children is the culmination of many months of recording, polishing and perfecting to achieve what Any Given Tuesday best described as, “. .. . mingling in a room full of shoegaze, alt-country, folk, and noise, shaking hands, kissing cheeks, and making friends with everyone.

[Verse 1]
G
If children were wishes
Em7 D D6
My mother spent hers on impossible things
C*
My brother was money
D*
My sister was love
G
And I was world peace

[Verse 2]
G
My brother, he spent it
Em7 D
My sister got pregnant
D6
And all that I'm worth
C*
Will only come true
D* G
When there are no more of us left on this earth

[Hook]
G
Ooh
Em7 D D6
Ooh, ooh, ooh
C* D* G
Ooh, ooh, ooh

[Verse 3]
G
If hearts were machines that kept
Em7 D D6
Running forever automatically
C*
Then you wouldn't be in that
D* G
Hospital bed, on that saline I-V

[Verse 4]
G
And if it's your diet
Em7 D D6
You stubbornly swear that it wasn't your fault
C*
You rather be dead in that hospital bed
D* G
Than cut back on sugar and salt

[Hook]
G
Ooh
Em7 D D6
Ooh, ooh, ooh
C* D* G
Ooh, ooh, ooh

[Verse 5]
G
Oh, weren't you afraid of
Em7 D D6
Living in a major American city
C*
So you marry a stupid
D* G
Unreachable girl who's impossibly pretty

[Verse 6]
G Em7 D
And I've seen you drive everyday of your life
D6
And it's always a rush
C*
And I have to wonder
G
How I ever let you do something so dangerous

[Verse 7]
G
And so I suppose
Em7
This is just how it goes no matter how I try
D
I just have to watch you
D* G
Get weaker and weaker 'till you finally die

[Verse 8]
G
But I have to remember
Em7 D D6
The wish of my mother and all that I'm worth
C*
Which will only come true
D* G
When there are no more of us left on this earth

[Hook]
G
Ooh
Em7 D D6
Ooh, ooh, ooh
C* D* G
Ooh, ooh, ooh
