[Verse]
Dm G
When the winter wind comes creeping through your soul
C F C
You'll just sit all night by firelight i can tell
Dm G
When they've taken all the smoke out of your coal
Am Em Dm
Why'd they have to take the warmth as well

[Chorus]
F G F C
A dark night would bring you near to me
Em Dm
to keep a boy from dreams of fear and harm
F C
and now the boy is grown
F C
those fears are yours alone
Am C Am G Em Dm F Am
and the old moon is resting in the new moon's arms

[Verse]
Dm G
so i tell you all the talk about the town
C F C
'cos to walk down there yourself you say is too far
Dm G
and all those friends who said they'd never let you down
Am Em Dm
all their seats are empty round the bar

[Chorus]
F G F C
A dark night would bring you near to me
Em Dm
to keep a boy from dreams of fear and harm
F C
and now the boy is grown
F C
those fears are yours alone
Am C Am G Em Dm F Am
and the old moon is resting in the new moon's arms

[Verse]
Dm G
and i'd pat that big old belly if i could
C F C
or i'd kiss you on your shining shakin' head
Dm F
of the tenderness and touch i'm not so good
Am Em Dm
so i'll stoke your precious fire for you instead

[Chorus]
F G F C
A dark night would bring you near to me
Em Dm
to keep a boy from dreams of fear and harm
F C
and now the boy is grown
F C
those fears are yours alone
Am C Am G Em Dm F Am
and the old moon is resting in the new moon's arms
