Tracy Grammer - Mother, I Climbed

CAPO: 1st Fret

INTRO: G

C G C
On tomorrow's painted wagon, in a yester-dreaming day
G C Am C
I rode to Heaven never thinking I'd be back this way
G C G Am7
Now I'm standing at your doorstep with my halo turning grey
C C/B D D/F# G
Open up your gate, Mari-ana

CHORUS:
D C G
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
C G
Mother I sought the chosen people
C D D/F# G
But I found no one to comfort me
D C G
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
C G
Mother I climbed the highest steeple
C D G
I found nothing to believe

G C G C
When they called my faults against the wall, I took my place in line
G C Am C
And put my trust in priestly men to break the ties that bind
G C G Am7
But their straight and narrow highway's just a row of billboard signs
C C/B D D/F# G
Open up your gate, Mari-ana

CHORUS:
D C G
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
C G
Mother I sang the sacred Psalter
C D D/F# G
But no saviour came to comfort me
D C G
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
C G
I went naked to the altar
C D G
I found nothing to believe

G C G C
So I set my feet to walking from the sidewalk to the sand
G C Am C
In search of any saint or sage who knew the master plan
G C G Am7
And I wandered every back-road in that broken promised land
C C/B D D/F# G
Open up your gate, Mari-ana

CHORUS:
D C G
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
C G
Mother I kept the plain and simple
C D D/F# G
But no shepherd came to comfort me
D C G
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
C G
I stood shivering in the temple
C D G
I found nothing to believe

G C G C
As lightning burns these bridges under, smoke will surely rise
G C Am C
And the fables of my innocence blow lazy through the skies
G C G Am7
When timeless truths reveal themselves as little more than lies
C C/B D D/F# G
Open up your gate, Mari-ana

CHORUS:
D C G
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
C G
Mother I razed the tainted chapel
C D D/F# G
But no angel came to comfort me
D C G
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
C G
Mother I stormed the Tower of Babel
C D G
I found nothing to believe

G C G C
So sticks and stones might break this body, words might wound my soul
G C Am C
And phantom visions fly me where the faithful fear to go
G C G Am7
But when this story's over and my sun is sinking low
C C/B D D/F# G
Open up your gate, Mari-ana

CHORUS:
D C G
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
C G
Mother the years pass out of counting
C D D/F# G
But no prophet comes to comfort me
D C G
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
C G
Mother I climbed the holy mountain
C D G
I found nothing to believe
C
Mother I climbed the holy mountain
D D/F# G
I found nothing to believe
