Tom Russell - Criminology

[Intro]
G

[Verse 1]

I had a gun pointed at my head on several occasions
G
Yeah, Nadine I was scared

Something about a black man with a machine gun
G
Make you wish you said your prayers
C
It was Nigeria
G
The year was Nineteen Sixty-Nine
D
I was teaching criminology
G
Played a little guitar on the side

[Verse 2]

In Apache Pass, Prince Rupert
G
Indian Jack puts a gun to my head

He said, "How do you like it now gentlemen?
G
How’s your blue eyed boy, Mr Dead?"
C
It was Canada this time
G
The year was Nineteen Seventy-One
D
I was performing at the Club Zanzibar
G
In the neon world of knives and guns

[Chorus]
Em
Oh, excuse me if I’m boring you, dear listener
G
Accept my humble apology
Am
You may think I’m just a folk singer, no
D G
I’m a master in the art of criminology

[Verse 3]

When Picasso died, the Indians cried
G
In a Prince George motel room

We were drunker than a thousand white men
G
Playing lumber camp saloon
C
It was Canada again
G
The year was Nineteen Seventy-Three
D
There were grizzly bears walking down main street
G
What an amazing sight to see

[Verse 4]

Well, the devil rides a cubist horse
G
The devil he’s got angles

But god is an expressionist
G
He got the devil strangled
C
Down in purgatorian limbo in hell
G
Ahh, them southern rip joints just like that
D
God’s waiting room is full of painters and poets
G
And old black jazz saints in pork pie hats

[Chorus]
Em
Well, excuse me if I’m boring you, dear listener
G
Accept my humble apology
Am
You may think I’m some jive folk singer, no
D G
I’m a master in the art of criminology

[Instrumental]
G C G D G

[Verse 5]

So, I got off a plane in Nigeria
G
It was Nineteen Sixty-Nine

Arrested by Ton Ton Macoute
G
Taking photos was a war zone crime
C
They were gonna hack me up with machetes
G
A US ambassador, come home, paid my bribe
D
So, I played guitar with Victor Uwaifo
G
Taught a little criminology on the side

[Chorus]
Em
Yeah, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it
G
No regrets, no surrender, no apology
Am
I know a little bit about a lot of things
D G
I’m a master in the art of criminology

[Chorus]
Em
Yeah, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it
G
No regrets, no surrender, no apology
Am
I know a little bit about a lot of things
D G
I’m a master in the art of criminology

[Outro]
G
