by Tom Paxton
Tom Paxton

Biography:

Tom Paxton (born Thomas Richard Paxton on October 31, 1937) is an American singer and writer of folk music whose songs have had enduring appeal (and include modern standards such as "The Last Thing on My Mind") known for a cynical, often political edge. The Paxton family moved to Bristow, Oklahoma in 1948, where Tom grew to adulthood and which he still considers home.

[Verse 1]
G G5 C G
Ever again the morning creeps across your shoulder,
G G5 C G
Through the frosted window pane the sun grows bolder.
G Em D
Your hair flows down your pillow, you're still sleeping.

[Chorus]
G Em C
I think I'll wake you now and hold you,
G Em C
Tell you again the things I told you;
G Em C
Behold, I give you the morning.
D G
I give you the day.

[Verse 2]
G G5 C G
Through the waving curtain wall the sun is streaming.
G G5 C G
Far behind your flickering eyelids you're still dreaming.
G Em D
You're dreaming of the good times and you're smiling.

[Chorus]
G Em C
I think I'll wake you now and hold you,
G Em C
Tell you again the things I told you;
G Em C
Behold, I give you the morning.
D G
I give you the day.

[Verse 3]
G G5 C G
Close beneath our windowsill the Earth is humming,
G G5 C G
Like an eager Christmas child the day is coming,
G Em D
Listen to the morning song it's singing.

[Chorus]
G Em C
I think I'll wake you now and hold you,
G Em C
Tell you again the things I told you;
G Em C
Behold, I give you the morning.
D G
I give you the day.

[Verse 4]
G G5 C G
Like an antique ballroom fan your eyelids flutter,
G G5 C G
Sunlight streams across your eyes through open shutter.
G Em D
Now I think you're ready for the journey.

[Chorus]
G Em C
I think I'll wake you now and hold you,
G Em C
Tell you again the things I told you;
G Em C
Behold, I give you the morning.
D G
I give you the day.
