Tom Lehrer

Pollution

by Tom Lehrer
Tom Lehrer

Biography:

Thomas Andrew "Tom" Lehrer (born 9 April 1928) is an American singer-songwriter, satirist, pianist, and mathematician. He has lectured on mathematics and musical theater.

Before attending college, Lehrer graduated from the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut. As an undergraduate student at Harvard University, he began to write comic songs to entertain his friends, including Fight Fiercely, Harvard (1945). Those songs later became (in a joking reference to a leading scientific journal, The Physical Review) The Physical Revue.

If you visit A-merican City,

you will find it very pretty.
C7 F F#dim
Just two things of which you must be-ware,
C C#dim G7 C
Don't drink the water and don't breathe the air.

Am G F E
Pol-lution, Pol-lution, They got smog and sewage and mud,
F C G7 C G7
Turn on your tap, to get hot and cold running crud

C
See the Halibuts

Being wiped out by detergeons

But they don't last long if they try.

Am G F E
Pol-lution, pol-lution, You can use the latest tooth-paste
F C G7 C
And then rinse your mouth, with in-dustrial waste.

C G7
Just go out for a breath of air,
C
And you'll be ready for Medicare.
C7 F F#dim
The city streets are really quite a thrill,
C C#dim G7 C
If the hoods don't get you, the mo-noxide will.

Am G F E
Pol-lution, pol-lution, wear a gas mask and a veil.
F C G7 C
Then you can breathe, long as you don't in-hale.

C G7
Lots of things there that you can drink,
C
But stay away from the kitchen sink.
C7 F F#dim
Throw out your garbage and I've got a hunch.
C C#dim G7 C
The folks downstream will drink it for lunch.

Am G F E
So go to the city, see the crazy people there,
F C F Em Dm C Am
Like lambs to the slaughter,
F Em Dm C Am
They're drink-ing the wa-ter
Dm7 G7 C
And breathing the air.
