Todd Snider

Money Compliments And Publicity

by Todd Snider
Todd Snider

Biography:

Todd Daniel Snider is a singer-songwriter born October 11, 1966 in Portland, Oregon.

Best known for his wry humor, Snider has been a fixture on the Americana, alt-country, and folk scene since his debut on MCA, entitled Songs for the Daily Planet, named for the bar where Snider used to play regularly in Memphis. On that album were the minor hits "Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues", a folk song about the early '90's grunge scene, featuring a band that "refused to play"

Money, Compliments, Publicity (Song Number 10)
Todd Snider
The Excitement Plan (2009)
Track #11

C Em F G x2

C Em
A man once said that the pinnacle of success
F G
Is when you've finally lost interest
C Em F G
In money, compliments, and publicity
C Emao
A noble enough idea, I supposeea
F Gii.
How on earth he does this, heaven only knows
C Em
I know I need a lot more of all three of those
F G
Before I ever have the nerve to turn up my nose
C Em F G
At any money, compliments, and publicity

C# G
I'm broke as the Ten Commandments
F G
Sometimes I'm harder to follow

C Em
I don't know whether to walk to school
F G
Or take my lunch, should've worn my watch, it's true
C Em
You may think you see a man who is looking for attention,
F G
But you're looking at a man who has lived
C
Through a little bit of poverty,
Em F G
Some anxiety, some scrutiny

C Em
If I ever do get my money together,
F G
I'm gonna take care of all of my friends
C
Buy an island, run a phone line, call 'em
Em F (stop)
Tell 'em all to get f**ked
F C
Oh! That oughta take care of them
Em
Just be me and my money,
F G
And my compliments, and my publicity
C Em F G
Sing it with me: "money, compliments, and publicity"

G
It's an issue for me,
F G
I went to see this therapist
F G
She said, "Just do the best you can do"
C F
Do the best you can do...
C F
Do the best you can do...
G F
I was hoping for something more specific

C Em F G C Em F G C Em F G F G F G

C Em
A man once said that the pinnacle of success
F G
Is when you've finally lost interest
C Em F G
In money, compliments, and publicity
C Em
Many years later, another man would say all that again
F G
But not for the sake of inspiring men
C
But rather 'cause he got nine songs
Em
And knows he needs at least ten
F G
Before he can go back to town and turn 'em all in
C Em F G
To get money--you guessed it--compliments, publicity

C Em F G
Money, compliments, and publicity
C Em F G
Lord, I'm gonna take it to the bank
C Em F G
I said money, I love the compliments and the publicity
C Em F G
I got so many people to thank
C Em F G
I wanna thank Clive Davis
C Em F G
I wanna thank the Good Lord up in heaven above
C Em F G
And all my fans for my money, my compliments, and my publicity
C Em F G
Money, compliments, and publicity
C Em F G
Lord, I would bathe in
C Em F G
Money, compliments, and publicity
C Em F G
Money, compliments, and publicity
