Tift Merritt

Biography:

Catherine Tift Merritt (born January 8, 1975, in Houston, Texas, but moved to Raleigh, North Carolina soon after) is a critically acclaimed American singer-songwriter, musician. She is currently based in New York.

Merritt's father taught her guitar chords and Percy Sledge songs. She began her professional career in 1998 with her band The Carbines playing small clubs. In her early twenties, though Tift had gigged by herself, she decided she was not very good at music and better suited for writing short stories.

Tift Merritt - Engine To Turn

CAPO: 1st Fret

INTRO: C F Am F

C F
I don't know how to fix the world
Am F
I don't know how to fix myself
C F
Seems like we both need some love
Am F
seems like we both need some help

C F
Maybe you could fix with might
Am F
Maybe you could just stare it down
C F
Seems like some tenderness
Am F
Could turn the whole thing around

CHORUS:
C Am
I'm just trying to get the engine to turn
C Am
I'm just trying to smile through my tears
C Am
And I still got so much to learn
C Am
But the best I can, is what I got to give
F C
Gonna give it while I'm here

F
Most days I want to speed up
Am F
Seems like I ought to slow down
C F
Maybe the pieces are here
Am F
Got to take a good look around

C F
Maybe the world feels like me
Am F
Wishing someone would sing it a song
C F
About how there's a lot of good here
Am F
About how it's done nothing wrong

CHORUS:
C Am
I'm just trying to get the engine to turn
C Am
I'm just trying to smile through my tears
C Am
And I still got so much to learn
C Am
But the best I can, is what I got to give
F C G
Gonna give it while I'm here

BRIDGE:
Am
Sometimes there's a choir in my head
F C
Singing at the top of their voice
F Am
Singing at the top of their voice
C G F
They sing, "Don't look back"
C G F
"Don't be scared"
C G F Am G
"Don't be scared_____"

CHORUS:
C Am
I'm just trying to get the engine to turn
C Am
I'm just trying to smile through my tears
C Am
And I still got so much to learn
C Am
But the best I can, is what I got to give
F C
Gonna give it while I'm here
