The Wolfe Tones

The Men Behind The Wire

by The Wolfe Tones
The Wolfe Tones

Biography:

The Wolfe Tones is an Irish rebel music band that incorporates elements of Irish traditional music. Formed in 1963, their most recognizable line-up that lasted for nearly 37 years until January 2001 was brothers Brian Warfield and Derek Warfield, and Noel Nagle, and Tommy Byrne. The band take its name from the Irish rebel and patriot Theobald Wolfe Tone, one of the leaders of the Irish Rebellion of 1798, with the double entendre of a wolf tone – a spurious sound that can affect instruments of the violin family.

C Am
Armored cars and tanks and guns
G C
came to take away our sons
F
but every man must stand behind
C G C
the men behind the wire

C F
Through the little streets of Belfast
C G
in the dark of early morn
C F
British soldiers came marauding
C G C
wrecking little homes with scorn
C F
hear the sobs of crying children
C G
dragging fathers from their beds
C F
watch the scene as helpless mothers
C G C
watch the blood fall from their heads

C Am
Armored cars and tanks and guns
G C
came to take away our sons!
F
but every man must stand behind
C G C
the men behind the wire

C F
Not for them no judge no jury,
C G
or indeed a crime at all
C F
being Irish means we're guilty
C G C
so we're guilty one and all
C F
round the world the truth will echo
C G
Cromwell's men are here again
C F
England´s name again is sullied
C G C
in the eyes of honest men

C Am
Armored cars and tanks and guns
G C
came to take away our sons!
F
but every man must stand behind
C G C
the men behind the wire

C F
Proudly march behind our banner
C G
firmly stand behind our men
C F
we will have them free to help us
C G C
build a nation once again
C F
all the people stand together
C G
proudly firmly on the way
C F
never fear, never falter
C G C
till the boys come home to stay

C Am
Armored cars and tanks and guns
G C
came to take away our sons!
F
but every man must stand behind
C G C
the men behind the wire
