The Weakerthans

This Is A Fire Door Never Leave Open

by The Weakerthans
The Weakerthans

Biography:

The Weakerthans is a Canadian indie rock/folk band headed by former Propagandhi member, John K. Samson and also comprising guitarist Stephen Carroll, bassist Greg Smith, and drummer Jason Tait. The band last released an album, Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre, in 2010. Since 2015, the band has been on hiatus.

The band's blend of punk-inflected folk rock with literate, witty, introspective lyrics have made them one of the most popular bands on the Canadian music scene.

[Verse 1]
C Em F
Headlights race towards the corner of the dining room
C Em F
Half illuminate a face before they disappear
C Em F
You breathe in forty years of failing to describe a feeling
C Em F G
I breathe out smoke against the window, trace the letters in your name

[Refrain 1]
G F
Our letters sound the same, full of all our changing
G F C C/E C/F C C/E C/F
That isn't change at all, all straight lines circle sometime

[Verse 2]
C Em F
You said somewhere there's a box full of replacement parts to
C Em F
All the tenderness we've broken or let rust away
C Em F
Somewhere sympathy is more than just a way of leaving
C Em F G
Somewhere someone says I'm sorry, someone's making plans to stay

[Refrain 2]
G F
So tell me it's okay, tell me anything or
G F
Show me there's a pull unassailable

[Chorus 1]
C F
That will lead you there from the dark alone to benevolence that you've never known
Am G F
Or you knew when you were four and can't remember
C F
Where a small knife tears out those sloppy seams and the silence knows what your silence means
Am G F C C/E C/F C C/E C/F
And your metaphors as mixed as you can make them, are linked like days together

[Interlude]
C Em F

[Refrain 3]
G F
I still hear trains at night, when the wind is right I
G F N.C.
Remember everything, lick and thread this string

[Chorus 2]
C F
That will never mend you or tailor more than a memory of a kitchen floor
Am G F
Or the fire door that we kept propping open
C F
And I love this place, the enormous sky and the faces, hands that I'm haunted by
Am G F C C/E C/F C C/E C/F
So why can't I forgive these buildings, these frameworks labeled home

[Outro]
C Em F
Headlights race towards the corner of the dining room
C Em F
Half illuminate a face before they disappear
