The Watersons

Red Wine And Promises

by The Watersons
The Watersons

Biography:

An English folk group from Hull, Yorkshire, the Watersons performed mainly traditional songs with little or no accompaniment. Their distinctive sound came from their close harmonies.

Original members were Norma Waterson, Mike Waterson, and Lal Waterson, with their cousin John Harrison from Kingston High School. They had a skiffle band in the early 1960s but moved on to playing more traditional material. They were briefly known as "The Folksons".

This is the best song written by Lal Waterson for the "Bright Phoebus" album. It
features Norma Waterson on vocals but there's a demo version sung by Lal herself.

G C Em
Fell in the street in a drunken heap;
Am G
There's bright water all around me.
G C Em
And the cheap red wine in me drunken brain
Am G
Has left a burning flame in me belly.
Dm
I don't need nobody helping me;
C G
I don't need nobody's arm around me.

G C Em
If I was a black beetle upside down,
Am G
I could kick all night long and never turn around.
G C Em
But I'm flat on my back in the rainbow rain,
Am G
Still I know, in the morning I'll be on me feet again.
Dm
Just can't get a grip on the ground;
C G
I'm upside down the right way round.

G C Em
I promise thee my shameless lady,
Am G
Who laughs out loud in the sad patient night,
G C Em
Always to be honestly thee,
Am G
In me waking dreams or me drunken nights,
Dm
I don't fear the yawning sunshine morning;
C G
I'm forward running back again.

G C Em
Fell in the street in a drunken heap;
Am G
There's bright water all around me.
G C Em
And the cheap red wine in me drunken brain
Am G
Has left a burning flame in me belly.
Dm
I don't need nobody helping me;
C G
I don't need nobody's arm around me.
