The Searchers

Take Me For What Im Worth

by The Searchers
The Searchers

Biography:

Originally founded as a skiffle group in Liverpool in 1959 by John McNally and Mike Pender (Mike Prendergast), the band took their name from the classic 1956 John Wayne western The Searchers. Prendergast claims that the name was his idea, but McNally ascribes it to 'Big Ron' Woodbridge, their first lead singer. The issue remains unresolved.

The band grew out of an earlier skiffle group formed by McNally, with his friends Brian Dolan (guitar) and Tony West (bass).

Verse 1:

Em Bm
Don't try and understand me
C G
You never could do that
Em Bm Am7 D7
Ahh, and in the end you'd wind up being hurt
Em Bm
I'm a man with too many problems
C
That keep pounding on my brain

G C G
So if you want me you'll take me for what I'm worth
C G C
(If you want me you'll take me for what I'm worth)

Verse 2:

I don't pretend to be a saint
My sins they are many
But there's noone perfect in this universe
And though you think I'm weird
Don't try and change me dear

'Cause if you want me you'll take me for what I'm worth
G C Em
(If you want me you'll take me for what I'm worth)

Guitar solo:

Em Bm C G
/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /
(...worth)

Verse 3:

Hear a howling wind outside my door
There's restlessness within
Oh, I'm like a rain cloud that one day may burst
We both know I'll be leavin'
And if one little tear you grieve

Ahh, it's all right 'cause that's all I'm really worth
(It's all right 'cause that's all I'm really worth)

Verse 4:

And if you think about me
In your lonesome hours
Ahh, and on your lips there's a sweet word and not a curse
Ahh, then I'll be comin' back one day
When my wandering is over

Ahh, if you want me you'll take me for what I'm worth
(If you want me you'll take me for what I'm worth)

Coda:

Ahh, if you want me you'll take me for what I'm worth
G C G [end cold]
(If you want me you'll take me for what I'm worth)
