The Rutles

Back In 64

by The Rutles
The Rutles

Biography:

The Rutles is a pop group from London, England. A spoof of the massively popular and influential rock group The Beatles, The Rutles was the brainchild of Neil Innes, former member of The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, and ex-Monty Python member Eric Idle. The four official members of The Rutles were Dirk McQuickly (Eric Idle), Ron Nasty (Neil Innes), Stig O'Hara (Ricky Fataar) and Barry Wom (John Halsey), parodies of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, respectively.

[Verse 1]
Dmaj7
Many years from now,
D7 B7 Em
When your grandchildren climb upon your knee,
Gm D
You may be quite astonished to see...
E7 A
...How many channels they can change on T. V.
A7 D Dmaj7 D7
When some old film in black and white ...comes on,
B7 Em
And there you are upon the screen,
Gm D
Or is it someone just like someone you've been,
E7 A
Looking not a day over nine - teen?

"Grandad!", the little ones are asking you,

"Why do you look so sad?" (So sad!)
E7
So you tell them all about the fun you had!

Back in '64 before you were born,
B7 B B7 Em
People had no time for pouring scorn...

No one was obese, only tight trousers were worn!

[Verse 4]

Back in '64 we were at it like knives,
G F# G Bdim
Back in '64 the time of our lives...was in the present tense!
D B7
Now does that make common sense,
E7 A7 D
Any more than girls with hairdos called bee - hives?
Aaug
(Zumm, zumm, zumm, zumm!)

[Verse 5]

Back in '64 before you were born,
G F#
Back in '64 before you were born,
G Bdim D B7
But as you've gone on and on, your audience has flown,
E7
And, as you find yourself all on your own...

[Verse 6]
Aaug D Dmaj7
You may wistfully re - call...
D7 B7
...How Benjamin Dis - raeli said that,
Em Gm
..."Life is too short to be small!"
D Dmaj7 D7 B7
Or maybe,...like some old -time song, over all it's long,
Em7 A7 D Dm7-5 Bb D
So, ...so long, ...it's all over!
