The National

Biography:

The National is a Brooklyn-based indie rock band formed in 1999, by friends from Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. The band's lyrics are written and sung by Matt Berninger in a distinctive, deep baritone. The rest of the band is composed of two pairs of brothers: Aaron Dessner (guitar, bass, keyboards), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Scott Devendorf (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).

Their self-titled debut album"The National" (Brassland 2001) was recorded and released before they had played even a single show.

From their new album "Trouble Will Find Me", which will be amazing because this song is
on it. The C/Bb chord is just to get a nice transition from Am, and it makes it sound
more like the recording, you can also briefly play a Bb. Enjoy!

Don’t Swallow the Cap
The National

[Intro]
F Am F Am F Am F Am

Dm F Am C

[Verse 1]

Dm
Dull light breaks behind the houses
F
I don’t see what’s strange about this
Am
Tiny bubbles hang above me
C/Bb C
It’s a sign that someone loves me
Dm
I can hardly stand upright
F
Hit my head upon the light
Am
I have faith but don’t believe it
C/Bb C
It's not there enough to leave it

[Pre-Chorus]

Dm F
Everything I love is on the table
Am C
Everything I love is out to sea

[Verse 2]

Dm
I have only two emotions
F
Careful fear and dead devotion.
Am
I can’t get the balance right.
C/Bb C
Throw all my marbles in the fire.
Dm
I see all the ones I wept for
F
All the things I had it in for
Am
I won’t cry until I hear
C/Bb C
Cause I was not supposed to be here.

[Pre-Chorus]

Dm F
Everything I love is on the table
Am C
Everything I love is out to sea

[Chorus]

Bb
I’m not alone
Dm
I’ll never be
F
Into the bone
Bb
I’ll never grieve

[Verse 3]

Dm
I’m tired, I’m freezing, I’m done
F
When it gets so late I forget everyone
Am
I need somewhere to stay
C/Bb C
Don’t think anybody I know is awake
Dm
Calm down it’s alright
F
Keep my arms the rest of the night
Am
When they ask what do I see
C/Bb C
I say a bright white beautiful heaven hangin’ over me

[Pre-Chorus]

Dm F
Ahhhhh
Am C
Ahhh-Ahhh Ahhhh

[Chorus]

Bb
I’m not alone
Dm
I’ll never be
F
Into the bone
Bb
I’ll never grieve
Bb
And if you want (dead seriously)
Dm
To see me cry (don’t swallow the cap)
F
Play ‘Let It Be (pat yourself on the back)
Bb
Or ‘Nevermind’ (dead seriously)

[Verse 4]

Dm
Is it time to leave? Is it time to think about
F
What I wanna say to the girls at the door?
Am
I need somewhere to be
C/Bb C
But I can’t get around the river in front of me
Dm
Calm down it’s alright
F
Lead my arms the rest of the night
Am
When they ask what do I see
C/Bb C
I say a bright white beautiful heaven hangin’ over me

[Pre-Chorus]

Dm F
Ahhhhh
Am C
Ahhh-Ahhh Ahhhh

[Chorus]

Bb
I’m not alone (dead seriously)
Dm
I’ll never be (don’t swallow the cap)
F
Into the bones (pat yourself on the back)
Bb
I’ll never grieve (dead seriously)

And if you want (dead seriously)
Dm
To see me cry (don’t swallow the cap)

Or ‘Nevermind’ (dead seriously)
