Alabama

by The Louvin Brothers
The Louvin Brothers

Biography:

The Louvin Brothers were an American country music duo composed of brothers Ira Lonnie Loudermilk (1924–1965) and Charlie Elzer Loudermilk (1927–2011), better known as Ira and Charlie Louvin. They helped popularize close harmony, a genre of country music. The brothers are cousins to John D. Loudermilk, a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member.

The brothers adopted the name Louvin Brothers in the 1940s as they began their career in gospel music.

E A E
Alabama, your beautiful sunlight
A E A B
Your fields of cerisa, potatos and corn
E A E
Alabama, your crimson red clover
A E A B
All mingled around the old place I was born

E A E
Alabama, your hills and your valleys
A E A B
Your creeks sing with laughter as onward they flow
E A E
Alabama, so sweet in the springtime
A E A B
Sweet ferns and wild flowers in winter with snow

E A E
Alabama, so sweet to my memory
A E A B
You shine like a light on the beautiful hill
E A E
Alabama, in days of my childhood
A E A B
I've labored and toiled at the old sorghum mill

E A E
Alabama, when red leaves are falling
A E A B
I've roamed through your pastures with fences of rail
E A E
Alabama, when possums are crawling and
A E A B
And hound dogs are whining and wagging their tails

E A E
Alabama, your beautiful highways
A E A B
Are carved through the mountain where loved ones do wait
E A E
Alabama, your goldenrod flowers
A E A B
And the welcome home sign hanging over the gate

E A E
Alabama, to me you are calling
A E A B
My footsteps are comin’ no longer to stray
E A E
Alabama, you hold all I long for
A E A B
You hold all I love, so I'm coming today
