I took the needle out of my arm about
A# F
A year ago today
F A
And every day since then I've been taking
A# C
The needle out of my brain
A# C
So when I'm staring down at my hands I can't explain
A A#
Just what it is that I'm thinking of
C F
Except thank god that all my veins have to pump is my blood

F A
I've done you so much wrong I can't believe
A# F
You would still talk to me
F A
And I say so much bullshit I can't believe
A# C
That anyone around me can breathe
A# C
I know that it's a little dramatic
A A#
But the word for not changing is “dead ”
C F
So I'm getting better my friends but please don't hold your breath

F A
I met a man in rehab the first time
A# F
An organizer in prison
F A
He lived in Chicago when the cops shot Fred Hampton
A# C
But he was just a kid back then
A# C
Justice doesn't flow from police guns
A A#
I'm reminded of that all the time
C F
As long as there is a law peace will be a crime

F A A# F

F A
What the news calls economics
A# F
I still call it violence
F A
If your god is a judge or a jailer
A# C
I'm still an atheist
A# C
But I try to have faith in the things that will happen
A A#
I get saved from myself when i do
C F
So maybe “god” isn't the right word but I believe in you
