The Irish Rovers

The Unicorn

by The Irish Rovers
The Irish Rovers

Biography:

A popular and long-running Canadian-Irish folk group that saw their beginning in the 1960s, The Irish Rovers are particularly well-known for their hit recording of Shel Silverstein's "The Unicorn," although a great many more of their characteristically happy and oft-comical songs remain well-known to this day. In 2010, the band celebrated 45 years as recording artists, with their latest CD, "Gracehill Fair" and filming the DVD/television special "Home in Ireland", shot entirely on-location, throughout the northwest coast of Ireland.

I only transcribed the signature intro notes and one fill pattern.
Was surprised at how many great little fills were in the mix but I
only did one.

F Gm C F
A long time ago when the earth was green… there was more kinds of animals than you'd ever seen
F Bb F Gm C F
They'd run around free while the earth was being born but the loveliest of them all was the un-i-corn

F Gm C F
There was green alligators and long necked geese… Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
F Bb F Gm C F Gm C F
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born… The loveliest of all was the un-i-corn (fill One)

F Gm C F
Now God seen some sinning and it gave him a pain.. And he says stand back I'm going to make it rain
F Bb F Gm C F
He says, Hey, brother Noah I'll tell you what to do, Build me a floating zoo

"and take some of them...."

F Gm C F
Green alligators and long necked geese… Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
F Bb F Gm C F Gm C F
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born… Don’t you forget my un-i-corn

F Gm C F
Old Noah was there to answer the call He finished up making the ark just as the rain started pourin
F Bb F Gm C F
He marched in the animals two by two, And he called out as they went through,

"Hey lord,"

F Gm C F
I got your green alligators and long necked geese.. Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
F Bb F Gm C F Gm C F
Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn, I just can't see no un-i-corn

F Gm C F
Then Noah looked out through the driving rain, Them unicorns were hiding, playing silly games
F Bb F Gm C F
Kicking and splashing while the rain was pourin' Oh, them silly un-i-corns!"

F Gm C F
There were green alligators and long necked geese, Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
F Bb F Gm C F Gm C F
Noah cried, Close the door cause the rain's pourin' And we just can't wait for those un-i-corn

F Gm
The ark started moving it drifted with the tides
C F
Them unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried
F Bb
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away,

“And that's why ya never seen a unicorn to this very day”

(run up) F Gm C F
You'll see green alligators and long necked geese, Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
F Bb F Gm C F C F
Some cats and rats elephants, but sure as you're born, You're never gonna see no u--ni---corn
