The Dubliners

When The Boys Come Rolling Home

by The Dubliners
The Dubliners

Biography:

The Dubliners was an Irish folk band founded in Dublin, Ireland, in 1962. One of the most influential Irish acts of the 20th century, they celebrated 50 years together in 2012, making them Ireland's longest surviving musical act. Also in 2012, the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards bestowed them with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The group announced their retirement in the autumn of 2012 following the death of founding member Barney McKenna (born 16 December 1939; died 5 April 2012).

[Verse 1]
C F C
I always will remember well the day we went away
F C F G
Sailin’ out of Belfast in the morning
C F C
Our hopes were on tomorrow as we kissed the girls farewell
F C G C
But our dreams were on the day of our returning

[Chorus]
F C F C G
There’ll be dancin’ romancin’ and never more we’ll roam
F C Am
There’ll be rolling in the hay there’ll be whiskey in the tea
C G C
When the boys come rolling home

[Verse 2]
C F C
We safely reached the other side in New York City fair
F C F G
In spite of wind and rain and stormy weather
C F C
We all sat down and drank a glass and wished each other well
F C G C
And we said we’ll all come back again together

[Chorus]
F C F C G
There’ll be dancin’ romancin’ and never more we’ll roam
F C Am
There’ll be rolling in the hay there’ll be whiskey in the tea
C G C
When the boys come rolling home

[Verse 3]

Well Joe he went to Boston and Sam to Buffalo
F C F G
And Pat went out as far as California

F C G C
And they always spoke of Ireland and returning

[Chorus]
F C F C G
There’ll be dancin’ romancin’ and never more we’ll roam
F C Am
There’ll be rolling in the hay there’ll be whiskey in the tea
C G C
When the boys come rolling home

[Verse 4]
C F C
I must be over eighty now my grandson’s by my bed
F C F G
And here I’m in Chicago and still scheming
C F C
He says he’ll take me back again to rest my weary head
F C G C
And I’ll leave him a legacy of dreaming

[Chorus]
F C F C G
There’ll be dancin’ romancin’ and never more we’ll roam
F C Am
There’ll be rolling in the hay there’ll be whiskey in the tea
C G C
When the boys come rolling home

[Chorus]
