The Cowsills

Newspaper Blanket

by The Cowsills
The Cowsills

Biography:

The Cowsills were a singing group from Newport, Rhode Island specializing in what would later be defined as bubblegum pop. The band was formed in the spring of 1965 by four brothers — Barry, Bill, Bob, and John Cowsill. After their initial success, the brothers were later joined by their siblings, Susan and Paul and their mother, Barbara. Rounding out the group was remaining brother Richard, who did not sing with the group, but was assigned as road manager and advisor.

Title: Newspaper Blanket

[Intro]
Cm
Sad old man nobody loves him

[Verse]
Cm Fm G# D#
Every morning I would see him sleeping in the dew
Cm Fm G
He never noticed me as I passed by
Cm Fm G# D#
I'd walk by slowly staring at the holes worn through his shoes
Cm Fm G
Wondering how he managed to get by

[Chorus]
Cm Fm Am
Sad old man nobody loves him
Cm B F D#
Sad old man has no place to stay
G# G#m
And nothing to claim but a broken down park bench
A# Gm
And a newspaper blanket on a cold winter's day

[Verse]
Cm Fm G# D#
The afternoon would come; I'd see him begging by the square
Cm Fm G
While I was in the crowd without a mind
Cm Fm G# D#
And had I been alone, I would have told him someone cared
Cm Fm G
But it never bothered him for he was blind

[Chorus]
Cm Fm Am
Sad old man nobody loves him
Cm B F D#
Sad old man has no place to stay
G# G#m
And nothing to claim but a broken down park bench
A# Gm
And a newspaper blanket on a cold winter's day

[Outro]
Cm Fm Am
Sad old man how long will you be here
Cm B F D#
Sad old man how long can you stay
G# G#m
For if you should leave who'll take care of the park bench
A# Gm
And the newspaper blanket would be left by the way
