The Corries

The Folker

by The Corries
The Corries

Biography:

The Corries were a Scottish folk group which emerged from the Scottish folk revival of the early 1960s. Although the group went through several changes of line-up in the early days, it was as the partnership of Roy Williamson (1936 - 1990) and Ronnie Browne that it is best known. The early 1970s were the Corries' finest hour.

In 1962, Roy Williamson teamed up with Bill Smith and Ron Cockburn to form the "Corrie Folk Trio". Their first performance was in the Waverley Bar in St Mary's Street, Edinburgh.

[Verse 1]

G Em
Well, my name is "Fingers Murphy" but my story's seldom told
D D7 D G
I massacre folk music with a yard of German plywood and a plectrum
Em D C G
I do requests-just the ones that have two chords in, And I disregard the rest
D D7 D G
Na na nya na na na na na na nya

[Verse 2]

G Em
Well, I stand on stage the hero a martyr to me trade
D D7 D G
And carry the reminders of all the gigs I've played in like the Irish Club-in Luton
Em D C G
Where I fled in mortal fear-with the imprint of a Guinness bottle stamped across my ear
D D7 D G
Na na nya na na na na na na nya

[Verse 3]

G Em
Seeking twenty with expenses I went looking for a gig
D D7 D G
Got no offers--just a come on from a groupie up in Neasden
Em D C G
I do declare--I was feeling rather randy so I had her then and there
D D7 D G
Na na nya na na na na na na nya

[Chorus]

Em D
Na na na-ya (Tshhhh...) Na na na na na na na-ya
Em D G
Na na na-ya (Tshhhh...) Na na na na na na na-ya
Em D
Na na na-ya (Tshhhh...) Na na na na na na na-ya
Em D G
Na na na-ya (Tshhhh...) Na na na na na na na-ya

[Verse 4]
G Em
Well, I've sung the full tradition with my finger in my ear
D D7 D G
Cause half the stuff I'm singin'-I just can't bear to hear-it's a load of cobblers
Em D C G
Bar after bar--to the rhythm of an out of tune Japanese guitar
D D7 D G
Na na nya na na na na na na nya

[Verse 5]

G Em
Well, I met this great guitarist-I asked him for advice
D D7 D G
But the message that he gave me--wasn't very nice or even civil
Em D C G
Stick it where--and if I did how could I tune it with it stuck way up there
D D7 D G
Na na nya na na na na na na nya

[Chorus]

Em D
Na na na-ya (Tshhhh...) Na na na na na na na-ya
Em D G
Na na na-ya (Tshhhh...) Na na na na na na na-ya
Em D
Na na na-ya (Tshhhh...) Na na na na na na na-ya
Em D G
Na na na-ya (Tshhhh...) Na na na na na na na-ya
