The Corries

Bannockburn

by The Corries
The Corries

Biography:

The Corries were a Scottish folk group which emerged from the Scottish folk revival of the early 1960s. Although the group went through several changes of line-up in the early days, it was as the partnership of Roy Williamson (1936 - 1990) and Ronnie Browne that it is best known. The early 1970s were the Corries' finest hour.

In 1962, Roy Williamson teamed up with Bill Smith and Ron Cockburn to form the "Corrie Folk Trio". Their first performance was in the Waverley Bar in St Mary's Street, Edinburgh.

[Verse]

G C
In 1314, the twenty-fourth of June,
D G
King Eddie says "We're ready now to steal the stone of Scone".
G C
He brought his biggest army but he had backed a deuce,
D G
at Bannockburn he found that he was up against the Bruce.

[Chorus]
G
Well, we raised our pipes and the English kept a-coming,
D G
but they werena quite so happy when we gie'd the pipes a blaw,
G
struck once more, they began a-running,
D G
ready, steady, Eddie, go, it's time to shoot the craw.

[Verse]
G C
Well, we had a bowl of porridge and a wee bit pinch of salt,
D G
we had a dram of whisky and it was the finest malt.
G C
We each wore a tammy and we wore the philibegs,
D G
Eddie was in terror when he seen the hairy legs.

[Chorus]
G
Well, we raised our pipes and the English kept a-coming,
D G
but they werena quite so happy when we gie'd the pipes a blaw,
G
struck once more, they began a-running,
D G
ready, steady, Eddie, go, it's time to shoot the craw.

[Verse]
G C
Now poor King Edward, nearly had a fit,
D G
when he seen his cavalry falling doon a pit.
G C
his men looked up from the trap that Bruce had built,
D G
and they were shocked to find what was worn beneath the kilt.

[Chorus]
G
Well, we raised our pipes and the English kept a-coming,
D G
but they werena quite so happy when we gie'd the pipes a blaw,
G
struck once more, they began a-running,
D G
ready, steady, Eddie, go, it's time to shoot the craw.

[Verse]
G C
He sent for his archers, a group of country folk,
D G
they erred and they purred, what a funny way they spoke,
G C
with those archers Eddie had a go,
D G
but they were as effective as the ones on radio.

[Chorus]
G
Well, we raised our pipes and the English kept a-coming,
D G
but they werena quite so happy when we gie'd the pipes a blaw,
G
struck once more, they began a-running,
D G
ready, steady, Eddie, go, it's time to shoot the craw.

[Verse]
G C
On the fastest horse that you have ever saw,
D G
King Eddie went a-racing o'er the Border and awa,
G C
he was fond of Scotland, but he never did return,
D G
he didn't like the welcome that he got at Bannockburn.

[Chorus]
G
Well, we raised our pipes and the English kept a-coming,
D G
but they werena quite so happy when we gie'd the pipes a blaw,
G
struck once more, they began a-running,
D G
ready, steady, Eddie, go, it's time to shoot the craw.

GCG + Ready, steady, Eddie, go, it's time to shoot the craw.
