The Barr Brothers

The Devils Harp

by The Barr Brothers
The Barr Brothers

Biography:

The Barr Brothers is a Canadian folk quartet founded in Montreal, Quebec, consisting of Andrew and Brad Barr (of The Slip), Sarah Page and Andres Vial. Their first (and eponymous-titled) album was released in 2011.

Best known as founding members of the spirited and unpredictable rock trio The Slip, brothers Andrew and Brad Barr had spent most of the 90s criss-crossing North America. In the spring of 2004, the band was playing a small club in Montreal, QC when a fire broke out in the venue.

Before I get started I want to give credit where credit is due. This tablature was figured out by Big Bob
over on the SlipLive forums. I'm just putting it together with the lyrics to make it a little easier to
follow. His original post can be seen here (http://www.area216.net/sliplive/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3529). This
is based on this video of Brad Barr playing this song solo (http://vimeo.com/76729726). Enjoy.

Gm Gm/F
I tuned the devils harp
Gm/E D6/Gb
It was the last thing that I heard
Gm Gm/F
Before I walked the stretch of road
Gm/E D6/Gb
between Nagoya and absurd
Cm7
I meant to find my lover there
Gm Gm/F Gm/E
But I found a little bird
Eb Gm/D Cm7 Eb/Bb
She sang me how the world was made
Eb/A D6/Gb Gm
I hung on every word

Gm Gm/F
She told me why the rabbit cries
Gm/E D6/Gb
and why some stars were red
Gm Gm/F
She told me where the doper goes
Gm/E D6/Gb
to lay his weary head
Cm7
And that the world was incomplete
Gm Gm/F Gm/E
And the king would soon be dead
Eb Gm/D Cm7 Eb/Bb
She offered me her wing that night
Eb/A D6/Gb Gm
I took the road instead

Gm (3x0003)
C7 Gm
Maybe im back, baby
C7 Gm
Maybe im falling from the poplar tree
C7 Em C7 Gm
Carry me back, baby

Gm Gm/F
With borrowed pride I could not hide
Gm/E D6/Gb
I grew a sailors beard
Gm Gm/F
And as I walked to my innocence
Gm/E D6/Gb
My leaves disappeared
Cm7
Rented a room upon the hill
Gm Gm/F Gm/E
Where a marble cat appeared
Eb Gm/D Cm7 Eb/Bb
Showed me where the fire was
Eb/A D6/Gb Gm
And I had nothing to fear

Gm Gm/F
For all gods good and brotherhood
Gm/E D6/Gb
We drank til I was crowned
Gm Gm/F
Then a lady from the Everglades
Gm/E D6/Gb
pulled my ass up off the ground
Cm7
She kissed me four times on the cheek
Gm Gm/F Gm/E
And once upon the brow
Eb Gm/D Cm7 Eb/Bb
For a moment I believed that I
Eb/A D6/Gb Gm
had come for what I found

Gm Gm/F
Now I sit alone
Gm/E D6/Gb
with all the cracks in my guitar
Gm Gm/F
For all the miles Ive put behind

I havent come that far

But we are all compelled to look

For the wind inside a jar
