[Verse]
E
It was July hot in Georgia in 1942
A
All the men were off to war
E
and the women had nothing to do
E
I was 16 and hungry, lookin? for my first taste of love
B
When I brought her groceries to her door
E
I didn?t know how close I was

E
Her long blonde hair was flowing, and she smelled like sweet perfume
A
When I laid her groceries down,
E
she said you don?t have to leave so soon
E
A woman sure get lonely when her man?s gone off to fight
B
She reached out for my tremblin? hand,
E
As tear drops filled her eyes
B
And she said....

[Chorus]
E
War is hell on the homefront too
A
God only knows what a woman goes through
B E
She still needs what her man that?s gone can?t do
E
I can?t fight this fire alone
A
Stay with me until it?s gone
B E
Ooh, war is hell on the homefront too

*Step up a half-step and play as follows, or simply capo first fret*

[Verse]
F
It was July hot inside me as she led me to the bedroom door
A#
The satin sheets and pleasure
F
I never knew I could feel before
F
My first taste of lovin?, was everything it shoulda been

C
When a woman?s fightin? loneliness
F
It?s a battle she can?t win
F
I?ll always remember what she did and what she said
C
But the one thing I remember most
C
Is the way she turned his picture over
C F
Face down on the table by her bed
C
And how she said

[Chorus]
F
War is hell on the homefront too
A#
God only knows what a woman goes through
C F
She still needs what her man that?s gone can?t do
F A#
I can?t fight this fire alone
A#
Stay with me until it?s gone
B F
Ooh, war is hell on the homefront too
