The original album track was sung 'a cappella', and there have
been many alternative dance mixes, and various live and acoustic
versions since. This is my own interpretation for acoustic
guitar players.

CAPO: 2nd fret (Will then sound in the recorded key of F#m)

[Verse 1]
Emadd9 Cmaj7
I am sitting, in the morning, at the diner on the corner,
Emadd9 Cmaj7
I am waiting, at the counter, for the man to pour the coffee,
G6 Fmaj7#11
And he fills it only halfway, and be - fore I even argue,
Em B7
He is looking out the window at some - body coming in!

[Chorus]
Emadd9
||: Da -da! Da, da, da -da! Da, da, da -da!
Cmaj7
Da, da, da -da, da -da! :|| [x2]

[Verse 2]
Emadd9 Cmaj7
"It is always nice to see you!", says the man behind the counter,
Emadd9 Cmaj7
To the woman who has come in, she is shaking her umbrella,
G6 Fmaj7#11
And I look the other way, as they are kissing their hellos,
Em
And I'm pre - tending not to see them,
B7
And in - stead I pour the milk!

[Chorus]
Emadd9
||: Da -da! Da, da, da -da! Da, da, da -da!
Cmaj7
Da, da, da -da, da -da! :|| [x2]

[Verse 3]
Emadd9 Cmaj7
I open up the paper, there’s a story of an actor,
Emadd9 Cmaj7
Who had died while he was drinking, it was no one I had heard of,
G6 Fmaj7#11
And I’m turning to the horoscope, and looking for the funnies,
Em B7
When I'm feeling someone watching me, and so I raise my head!

[Chorus]
Emadd9
||: Da -da! Da, da, da -da! Da, da, da -da!
Cmaj7
Da, da, da -da, da -da! :|| [x2]

[Verse 4]
Emadd9 Cmaj7
There’s a woman on the outside, looking inside! Does she see me?
Emadd9
No, she does not really see me,
Cmaj7
'Cause she sees her own reflection,
G6 Fmaj7#11
And I’m trying not to notice that she’s hitching up her skirt,
Em
And while she’s straightening her stockings,
B7
Her hair has gotten wet!

[Chorus]
Emadd9
||: Da - da! Da, da, da - da! Da, da, da - da!
Cmaj7
Da, da, da -da, da -da! :|| [x2]

[Break]
Emadd9 Cmaj7
||: / / / / | / / / / :|| [x2]

[Verse 5]
Emadd9 Cmaj7
Oh, ...this ...rain it will continue through the morning,
Emadd9
As I’m listening to the bells of the cathedral,
Cmaj7 G6
I am thinking of your voice, and ...of ...the ...midnight picnic,
Fmaj7#11
Once upon a time before the rain began,
Em B7
And I finish up my coffee, and it's time to catch the train!

[Chorus]
Emadd9
||: Da -da! Da, da, da -da! Da, da, da -da!
Cmaj7 Emadd9
Da, da, da -da, da -da! :|| [x4] | / ||
