Growing up in the New Cross area of London and attending Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College, his musical career began in the late 1960s when he was busking (with John Crocker) and performing his own songs, some of which were later recorded by him and the band.

[Verse]
C G
It's a long, dark river my boat sails on
Am Em
Down to the murky sea
F C
Where a beam of goodness in your heart
F G
Serves to comfort me

C G
It's a distant, magical land I seek
Am Em
A desperate refugee
F C
A rebel who has lost his way
F G
But found the buried key

[Chorus]
F D
So it's alright
Em Am
Love won't let you down
F D
Safe on a good night
G C
Stranger comes to town

[Verse]
C G
If you find him wearing his old tin hat
Am Em
Beware the common saint
F C
Who could lead you down a reckless path
F G
To where the good guys ain't

C G
We could hold each other in common prayer
Am Em
Our babies close at hand
F C
We could live like drifters Rolling on
F G
Towards the promised land

[Chorus]
F D
So it's alright
Em Am
If love don't let you down
F D
Safe on a good night
G C
Stranger comes to town

[Bridge]
C G
Sir, don't let me down
Am Em
Please let me breathe
F D
God won't let me down
G C
He knows I wanna please

[Chorus]
F D
So it's alright
Em Am
If love don't let you down
F D
Safe on a good night
G C
Stranger comes to town

[Bridge]
C G
Sir, don't let me down
Am Em
Please let me breathe
F D
God won't let me down
G C
He knows I wanna please

[Verse]
C G
I could close my compass and sail on free
Am Em
And find the missing men
F C
Oh, I could lose my bearings like before
F G
And lose myself again

C G
When you find yourself in a crowded wood
Am Em
With no way through the trees
F C
And that old, sweet promise of something good
F G
Pulls you to your knees

[Outro]
F D
Well it's alright
Em Am
If love don't let you down
F D
Safe on a good night
G C
Stranger comes to town
