Biography:

Steve Harley (born Stephen Malcolm Ronald Nice in south London on 27 February 1951) is an English singer and songwriter, best known as frontman of the rock group Cockney Rebel (subsequently Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel), with whom he still tours.

Growing up in the New Cross area of London and attending Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College, his musical career began in the late 1960s when he was busking (with John Crocker) and performing his own songs, some of which were later recorded by him and the band.

[Intro]
Am C G x2
Am C

[Verse 1]
G C
The hungry man knows who's to blame, the city boys who know no shame
G C
Justify the things they do with ugly, callous attitude
G C
Wind of change it howls outside and makes my pony terrified
G C
Greensward in the dust and gloom lies dormant in the afternoon

[Chorus]
Am G D
A hungry man knows what it means
Am G D
He got eyes that see beyond the common dreams
C D
And it's all in a life's work
C Am G
All in a life's work

[Break]
Am C G
Am C

[Verse 2]
G C
The suitcase left unopened where the ravaged huddled in despair
G C
Sit head in hands in dread pursuit of any lie that hints at truth
G C
The common saviour, so it goes with hyped-up children in repose
G C
And satisfaction that it cost, the lucky man, the taxman lost

[Chorus]
Am G D
A hungry man knows what it means
Am G D
He got eyes that see beyond the common dreams
C D
And it's all in a life's work
C Am
All in a life's work

[Solo]

[Verse 3]
G C
Who knows where the river flows? It wanders on, and on it goes
G C
Who sees where the companies and lines of men fall to their knees?
G C
The country doctor rambles on in Dylan's dream where life is song
G C
Many times you'd kneel and pray, the big battalions stay away

[Chorus]
Am G D
A hungry man knows what it means
Am G D
He got eyes that see beyond the common dreams
C D
And it's all in a life's work
C Am
All in a life's work

[Break]
Am C G
