Between The Lines – Steve Goodman
Transcribed by Jon Paul Sapsford

[Verse 1]
C F
The day you're born they sign a piece of paper
C G
That will certify the date of your birth
C F
And the day you die they sign another
C G C
Just to prove you've gone back to the earth

[Chorus]
Bb F
And between those two pieces of paper
C G
There is the truth that is so hard to find
C F
And the story of your life is written ', but
C G C
You must read in between the lines

[Verse 2]
Bb F
Now when you're young you think it don't matter
C G
If you leap before you look
C F
But those old folks are wiser and sadder
C G C
From the chances that they took

[Chorus 2]
Bb F
Now when your chance comes along, you must take it
C G
Just be careful and take your time
C F
And the chances are good you will make it
C G C
If you can read in between the lines

[Bridge]
F
And when someone tells you they love you
C
And no one has ever loved you more
F
It is wise to stop and consider how many
Dm G
Times they might have said that before

[Chorus 3]
F
Because when love leaves you cryin'
C
Then you will surely lose your mind
F
And you might have known love was lying
Dm G
If you could read in between the lines

[Verse 4]
F
And when someone tells you they love you
C
And no one has ever loved you more
F
It is wise to stop and consider how many
Dm G
Times they might have said that before

[Chorus 4]
F
Because when love leaves you cryin'
C
Then you will surely lose your mind
F
And you might have known love was lying
Dm G
If you could read in between the lines
