Steeleye Span

Two Constant Lovers

by Steeleye Span
Steeleye Span

Biography:

Steeleye Span formed in 1969 from members of Fairport Convention and out of the ashes of Sweeney's Men creating a distinctive fusion of both British folk with electric rock music. The resulting first version of the band was formed by ex-Fairport bassist Ashley Hutchings and built around two pairs of vocalists, Tim Hart and Maddy Prior and Gay & Terry Woods. Rhythm was to be supplied largely by Hutchings' bass, and without drums.

Tensions between the band grew during the production in 1970 of their first album

[Intro]
G G/F# Em Am Em C D

[Verse]
G G/F# Em Am
Now as I was a-walking down by the seashore
D G
Where the wind it did whistle and the waves they did roar
D G
There I heard a fair maid make a terrible sound
Em C Am D
Like the wind and the waves that did echo all around

[Chorus]
G C G
Crying, "Ohh, my love is gone
Am D
He's the youth I adore
Em
And he's drowned
C D Em C Em D
And I never will see him no more"

[Verse]
G G/F# Em Am
She'd a voice like a nightingale, skin like a dove
D G
And the song that she sang, it was all about love
D G
And when I asked her to marry me, oh, marry me please
Em C Am D
But the answer she gave me, "My love's drowned in the seas"

[Chorus]
G C G
Crying, "Ohh, my love is gone
Am D
He's the youth I adore
Em
And he's drowned
C D Em C Em D
And I never will see him no more"

[Verse]
G G/F# Em Am
So I said I had gold with silver beside
D G
On a coach and six horses, with me she could ride
D G
But she said, "I will not marry, nor prove you a wife
Em C Am D
I'll be constant and true all the days I have life"

[Chorus]

Crying, "Ohh, my love is gone
Am D
He's the youth I adore
Em
And he's drowned
C D Em C Em D

[Verse]
G G/F# Em Am
Then she flung her arms wide and she took a great leap
D G
From the cliffs that were high, to the billows so deep
D G
Saying, "The rocks of the ocean shall be my deathbed
Em C Am D
And the shrimps of the sea shall swim over my head"

[Chorus]
G C G
Crying, "Ohh, my love is gone
Am D
He's the youth I adore
Em
And he's drowned
C D Em C Em D
And I never will see him no more"

[Verse]
G G/F# Em Am
And now every night at six bells they appear
D G
When the moon shines bright and the stars they are clear
D G
These two constant lovers with each other's charms
Em C Am D
Rolling over and over in each other's arms

[Chorus]
G C G
Crying, "Ohh, my love is gone

He's the youth I adore

And I never will see him no more"
