Biography:
Shakey Graves, aka Alejandro Rose-Garcia from Austin, Texas, plays a gnarly composite of blues and folk as a one-man-band of epic sonic proportions. The sound emitted from his hollow body guitar, mildly distorted amp and suitcase drum belie the young singer’s lean frame. He fingerpicks while keeping time with a double-pedal kick drum, hitting a snare fitted into his suitcase drum and a tambourine fashioned to its side. And when he sings, Rose-Garcia unleashes an unearthly howl.

I like to play this all barre chords. It feels nifty going from the E barre on the 7th fret over
to the B barre, also on the seventh, then sliding down to the F# on the second fret.
For the chorus I start on the E barre and descend through B, F# and then down to open E for just
that segment.
It really is fun to play around though. Find the chords all over. See how quickly you can
transition. See how clearly you can execute each version of the same chord and get a feel for the
different voicings and how they work together.
Increase your fret board knowledge in the process.
I find when experimenting with Shakey's songs it helps to remember that:
A G barre (third fret - E shape) is a C if you move it over and play an A shape barre with the root
on the 5th string.
An A barre (E-shape) moves over to a D under the same circumstances. (A.D. anno domini)
A B shifts to an E (just BE)
C to an F (the two worst swear words, starting with the worst)
D to a G. (Dolce and Gabbana? Donate Gladly? Whatever you remember. I dunno)
It can be surprising how many chords for songs are in such close proximity with this in mind.
It may not be your favourite voicing for the chords in context but it seems to be opening doors for
me and mastering the E shape and A shape barres is something that should be done thoroughly in my
opinion.
But most of all, play around. Shakey rarely does the same rendition twice - sometimes he flat out
opts to use a different key altogehter. He may have tremendous skill but he certainly isn't rigid
in his playing style to his benefit.
