This song is from the musical called 55mm. Found it not too long ago so I decided to make this just to see the
lyrics and chords in the same place. The chords are based off of the actual sheet music so it all should be
correct, some timing might be off though. If you havea specific fingering for a chord that you think would
work best feel free to comment.
This is my first tab so I'm open to all critism.

[Intro]
Dm Dm Gm Dm x2

[Verse]
Bb*
Luanne's fat lip is drying,

The bastard's bacon frying,
Bb7 Fm/C Dsus
The shiner on her eye's gone bust and bleeding.

D Bb*
He shouts, "Girl, set the table!"

But he knows she ain't able.
Gm
Her arm's done broke,
Am
Hung limp like yolk,
Bb A
And softly she's repeating…

[Chorus]
Dm
Leave, Luanne.
Dm
Why don't you march out that door?
Gm Dm
Southern woman, he ain't no good to you.
Dm
Leave, Luanne
Dm
Louisiana wants war,
Am Gm
But it's you dying on her ruby plains.
Dm
And yet, loyal Luanne remains.

Dm Dm Gm Dm

Bb*
Ever since he got him laid off,

his sanity's just made off.
Bb7 Fm/C Dsus
No, he was never nice, but now he's cruel.

D Bb*
He rapes her, and he beats her,

she don't 'fess how he treats her,
Gm
'cause a Bible verse
Am
says it won't get worse,
Bb A
and she won't be a fool.

Dm/A A7
You won't never
Dm
leave, Luanne,
Dm
'cause if you walk out that door
Gm7 Dm
his truck will be gunning for you.
Dm
No, you won't leave, Luanne,
Dm
or he'll give you ‘What for?'
Am Gm7
You got heart where you should have had brains.
Am Dm
And so, loyal Luanne remains.

E/D Dm Caug
Someone's howling,
Dm Caug F Fm
screams like sighing with battered breath
E/D Ddim C
grating, growling,
Ddim C
never dying
Bb Bbm
in a fate
A Dm
worse than death.

Dm Dm Gm Dm

Bb*
But months of such conditions

turn laymen to logicians
Bb7 Fm/C Dsus
and tonight the bastard's sleeping like a log.

D Bb*
So she plucks the kitchen cleaver,

creeps up toward his roped-up lab retriever,
N.C.
and she cuts the rope,

and hope on hope,
Gm7
she starts to shout,
Am
"Your dog's got out!"
Gm7
She's got her chance.
Am
With no back glance
Bb5 A
she runs out to the bog,
Asus Bsus7 B7 Em Am7 Em
screaming, screaming: "Leave, Luanne!"

Em
Leave, Luanne.
Em
You've got a life left to live
Am7 Em
in a house hanging off the Golden Coast!
Em
Leave, Luanne.
Em
You won't forget nor forgive,
Bm7 Am
and she don't feel the stings, the rips, and scrapes
Bm E8
as finally Luanne escapes.

A/E x4

A7/E
Swim, Luanne! Swim, Luanne!
A
And in the swamp of leeches,

oh, as the preacher preaches,
F#m
as a light
E
in the night
A
push through the marsh and brushes

as the blood inside you rushes
F#m
left and right,
E
all your might

D
Until you reach the bank
A/C#
and you crawl onto the bank,
Bsus7 F#7/C#
'til you feel a little yank on your hair
Bb/F
and, stricken, stare at the bastard
D
who beat you there.

D D G D

Bb*
The bastard lies in bed now,

half-sad his wife is dead now.
Bb7 Fm/C Dsus
She drowned herself in a swamp in wild despair.

D Bb*
He thinks he used to love her,

but push it came to shove her,
Gm
a wife disposed,
Am
a life case closed,
Bb5 A
and no one seems to care,

Dm
to grieve Luanne.

Dm Dm Gm Dm

Bb*
Now no one's on his shoulder,

but his mattress don't feel colder,
Bb7 Fm/C Dsus
and in fact, it's hellish hot, and the air is dank and steaming.

D Bb*
Yet his body starts to shiver

when the window cracks a sliver
G
and a fiery fog
A
from the miry bog
G5
pours in the room
A5
in a sticky gloom
Gm
and there the man
Am
sees dead Luanne.
Gm
He's terrified,
Am
but he keeps his pride,
Bb5 A
'cause he knows that he ain't dreaming.
Asus A7
And he starts screaming,

Dm/A
Leave, Luanne.
Bm*
Hell sent you back here for more,
Gm Dm Cm B
'cause ain't no one ever loved you.
Bbm Dm/A
But said Luanne,
Bm*
"I've come to settle a score,"
Am Gm
and she shows him her feet are bound in chains.

Am Dm
And loyal Luanne remains
Dm
and remains
Dm
and remains
Dm
and remains!

E/D Fm6 E
Someone's howling,
Fm6
screams like sighing
E F
with battered breath.
E/D Ddim C
Grating, growling,
Ddim C
never dying
Bb A7
in a fate worse than

Dm
death. Luanne,

she cries her miserable wail
Gm Dm
so the bastards will never sleep again!

No, no reprieve, Luanne,

she brings their souls down to hell,
Am Gm
a caution to the cruelest of men
Dm/A
God loves Luanne!

Praised be!
Dm Dm Dm Dm
Amen!
