Ruth Moody

These Wilder Things

by Ruth Moody
Ruth Moody

Biography:

Ruth Moody is an Australian-born soprano singer-songwriter and member of the Canadian folk trio The Wailin' Jennys.

Moody grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba with her parents and three siblings. She was trained classically from the age of four but unlike her two sisters and brother she did not take to a stringed instrument, and from her mid-teens began to train vocally instead. In 1993 she began to study English and French literature at university with the intent of becoming a teacher like both her parents.

[Verse 1]

C
All this time
F C
it was staring me in the face
G/B Am
I was so far gone
F G
I could have ended it right there
C F C G/B Am
I was dead in the ring, lost in the race
C
All this time it was with me
G C
when I was nowhere

[Verse 2]

F C
Well it cuts the deepest
F C G/B Am
when you watch it moving in
C
And there ain't nothing
F G
you can do to turn it round
C F C G/B Am
There ain't no armor can save you then
C
Love takes no prisoners
G C
on this battleground

[Chorus]
F
And letting go
C
is the hardest part
Em
When holding on
F Gsus4
has been everything
C F Am F
Well I have this pain deep in my heart
C
That's why I sing,
G C
that's why I sing

F C G/B Am F C G C

[Verse 3]

F C
Cut me open
F C
when I'm dead and gone
G/B Am
You'll see this one ring,
F G
stained dark as wine
C F C G/B Am
This was always to be part of my story
C
Not yours but mine,
G C
not yours but mine

[Chorus]
F
And letting go
C
is the hardest part
Em
Holding on,
F G
some semblance of control
C F Am F
Well I have this pain deep in my heart
C
But I am still whole,
G C
I am still whole

F C
And I will waste my heart on fear no more
F C G
I will find a secret bell and make it ring
C F C
And let the rest be washed up on the shore
F C Gsus4 G Am
They can't be tamed, these wilder things
F C G C
No, they can't be tamed, these wilder things

F C G Am F C G C F C
