G
I'm back onboard that '49 Ford in 1956,
D
Long before the sun came up, way out in the sticks.
G Em
The headlights showed a two-run roadway back up in the pines,
G D G
First time I heard Johnny Cash sing I Walk the Line.

G
I got my thrill behind the wheel upon my Daddy's lap,
D
Grandpa rode co-pilot with a flashlight and a map,
G Em
Cane pole out the window, it was in the summertime.
G D G
First time I heard Johnny Cash sing I Walk the Line.

C
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine,
G
I keep my eyes wide open all the time.
C
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds,
D G
Because you're mine, I walk the line.

[Instrumental]
C G C D G

G
All these long years later its still music to my ears,
D
I swear it sounds as good right now as anything I hear.
G Em
I've seen the Mona Lisa, I've heard Shakespeare, read real fine,
G D G
Just like hearing Johnny Cash sing I walk the line.

C
As sure as night is dark and day is light,
G
I keep you on my mind both day and night.
C
And happiness I've known proves that its right,
D G
Because you're mine, I walk the line.
D G
Because you're mine, I walk the line.
