Rodney Atkins

Tell A Country Boy

by Rodney Atkins
Rodney Atkins

Biography:

Rodney Atkins, born March 28, 1969 in Knoxville, Tennessee, is an American country singer. He was an adopted child. As an infant at the Holston Methodist Home for Children in Greeneville, Tennessee, he was so sick that two couples who had taken him home returned him just a few days later. A third couple from Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, adopted him as well and, even though his ailments worsened, refused to give him up. His adoptive mother had been raised in a coal mining family near a tannery camp

[Intro]
(D) x 4 measures

[Verse]
D Em
Now he ain't much for talkin', but he means every word he says
G D
And that color on his arms and neck ain't from no tanning bed
D Em
Leaves no doubt 'bout where he stands on a Chevy or the Lord
G D D
Yeah, you can always tell a country boy, yeah | ---

D Em
Now his idea of heaven is home sweet home east Tennessee
G
But for a girl like you he would pull up roots
G F# Em D
And move down the road a piece
D Em
He'll always take his own sweet time, if you give him a choice
G D
Yeah, you can always tell a country boy

[Chorus]
G D A D
Yeah, you can always tell him but you can't tell him much
G D A
'Cause all he's ever gonna be is who he always was
Bm A G
A cross between his old man and his momma's pride and joy
F# Em G D D
You can always tell a country boy | ---

D Em
He'll go off and take a long walk when he needs some time to think
G G F# Em D
Might even let you drive his truck when he's had too much to drink
D Em
'Bout as true blue as Old Glory waitin' out there on the porch
G D
Yeah, you can always tell a country boy

[Chorus]
G D A D
Yeah, you can always tell him, but you can't tell him much
G D A
Some- times his gears'll turn so slow, you swear they're gonna rust
F# Em G D
You can always tell a country boy

[Bridge]
C Bm
You can drag him from the country every now and then
Em A
But you can't drag 'em forty acres out of him

[Chorus]
G D A D
Yeah, you can always tell him, but you can't tell him much
G F# A
He's on a fence about a lot of things, but on you his mind's made up
Bm A G
'Cause he swears there's nothin' sweeter than the sweet sound of your voice
F# Em A Bm
You can always tell a country boy

A G
What- ever's on your heart
F# E A D
Now come on and tell this country boy
