Robert Earl Keen

Not A Drop Of Rain

by Robert Earl Keen
Robert Earl Keen

Biography:

Robert Earl Keen, Jr. (born January 11, 1956 in Houston, Texas) is an American singer-songwriter. Growing up, Keen was interested in music, sports, movies and writing. He attended Texas A&M University, enrolling in the school of journalism. Disappointed in the College Station, Texas music scene, he began playing guitar and learned to read and write music, basing his style on folk, country, blues and roots rock. In 1977 he rented a house from landlord Jack Boyett, where his neighbor was a then-unknown Lyle Lovett.

Streets are almost empty, shops are closed down
Em Em
There?s not a soul left in the bar to tell my troubles to
Am Am
Think I?ll walk down to the river that runs just south of town
F F
I hate like hell when there ain?t nothin? left to do
C G Am F
But stand beneath the river bridge and listen for the train
C G C
It?s been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain

C C
I broke down in December and headed for the coast
Em Em
I thought the wind and water would elevate my mind
Am Am
I surfaced in the springtime feelin? like a ghost
F F
Missin? more than ever the things I left behind
C G Am F
Now I?m standin? on this riverbank and still cannot ex plain
C G C
It?s been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain

C C
My bag is full of letters unopened and unread
Em Em
I?m sure they?d tell the story of worry and of form
Am Am
My heart is beating heavy with all we left unsaid
F F
I swear to you I never meant you any harm
C G Am F
But sacrifice and compromise could never stand the str ain
C G C
It?s been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain

C C
Tonight I?ll close my eyes again and try to see your face
Em Em
And listen for your voice to tell me it?s alright to sleep
Am Am
Convince myself I?ll wake up in another time and place
F
Knowin? all the while that it?s a promise I can?t keep
C G Am F
A string of broken promises, another link of chain
C G C
It?s been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain

C C
The children on the playground, the lovers in the shade
Em Em
Remind me of a life and time that feels more like a dream
Am Am
When the sound of love and laughter was the music that we played
F F
As we lay beside the waters of a never ending stream
C G Am F
Now the stream has gone to hiding, the dream lives on in vain
C G C
It?s been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain

C C
The clouds are building slowly on the skyline to the east
Em Em
The wind and dust are dancing like the devil across the lake
Am Am
I could try to find a bottle or try to find a priest
F F
Salvation won?t be traveling either road I take
C G Am F
So I turn my collar to the wind that echoes this refrain
C G C
It?s been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain
C G Am C
It?s been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain
C G C
It?s been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain
