G D
It must be something while driving through
C G
and you suddenly see a piece of wood
C G
and you know that you drove every nail
D
to make a place for someone to stay.
G D
And it must be something to realise
C G
that somebody else now lives inside
C G D
when you know you were the first to walk within.
G D
And it must be something to rise at the dawn
C G
go travel the road and you’re all alone
C G D
Oh old man, what have they done to you.
G
And the tools of your trade
D
you hold in your hands
C G
you had your life and you lived it well
C G
and the marks of your craft can be found in the past
D
to the things that you made.
G D
And they hold up well and they stand up strong
C G
and I think my God, you did it all
C
with these tired old hands
G
that are now holding on
D
to what’s left of your life.
G D
It must be something to rise at the dawn
C G
go travel the road and you’re all alone
C G D
Oh old man what have they done to you.
G D
And the days of your youth were spent in the knowledge
C G
that you would forever and ever and always
C G D
be shaping and fixing the dwellings for others a to use.
